It sounds like the tranny is over heating, you might want to have the tranny check by a pro. Way to complex to work on with out experience and training.

Get your local garage to put a scanner on the car. The early s-type used to suffer from ignition coil faults. If a fault has been hinted towards a specific coil then swap to a different cylinder and see if the fault follows wich will indicate a coil fault.
Has the vehicle had its spark plugs changed? every 70.000 miles as they tend to fail if left unchanged. Intake manifold requires removing to replace bank 1 plugs.
Also check the small rubber elbow on the end of the plastic beather pipe wich runs throught the intake manifold branches. Elbow is located at the rear of the engine
Hope that helps

There is a strong chance that one of the stator rings on the rear driveshaft has broken away. They are located on the end of the rear driveshafts and after time they get corroded and will drop off. The ring is part of the hall effect sensor so when the wheel rotates there is no signal from wich ever side is broken thus throwing up an error.
Easiest way to check is to remove both wheels and look where the driveshaft slides into the hub from the rear and check the condition of the ring wich looks like a ladder. If its not there or sections are missing there is your problem.
There is a kit that you can buy wich changes the end of the shaft rather than the whole driveshaft.

The engine light shows a fault has occurred. The recorded fault will be visible if you have the codes read. One of the most common faults is the MAF (mass air flow sensor) this sometimes shows a wrong reading and logs as a fault, The light may go back out after the engine has completed another self check - if there is no ongoing fault. Get the codes read to be sure. .............. hope this helps
