Changing the center motor mount is almost impossible to do with lifting the motor up from the can. I had a 2002 neon and I replaced the other mounts and left the center mount alone. The other new mounts seem to compensate for the bad one. I have been told that the motors are designed to shake a little.
If its a shake it may be a head gasket that is out. Did the cars radiator get hot ? Check the radiator and dipstick for signs of oil. The dipstick will be milky. You can usually smell oil in the radiator.
If the motor mounts are not broken or cracked, I would not change them, yet.
However, the shaking is a problem that probably should be addressed.
If it's a 4 cyl. vs. a 6 cyl. it may have more shaking than desirable.
I would have an engine analysis performed to see if there are any tune up issues on this engine that can be resolved economically.
How many miles does it have since it was tuned up?
If you've replaced a worn motor mount and the engine still shakes, you may have another that needs to be replaced. If you changed all of them, then the problem isn't the motor mounts but the motor itself. Something is causing it to shake more than the mounts can handle and you need to have it checked out by a mechanic.
I would ask you why you want to change the mounts? They usually are not a problem unless the car was in a crash. Can you see that they are broken? If it is just engine shaking due to rough idle then the motor mounts will not solve this. You will need to find out what is causing the misfire to smooth it out.
A motor mount not installed correctly?Open the hood and put the emergency brake on,with someone looking at the motor put the car in drive, press on the brake and give a little gas---if the motor moves up the mount may be the issue.
