Location of air filter on landrover freelander td4

How to replace

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

if its a diesel engine, with the BMW engine, just take off the air intake cover on the top of the engine it has 5mm alan key screws holding id down plus a couple of hidden ones. you will find it under the rear most cover towards the windscreen. and the air filter its self is about 18 inches long cylinder type. be careful refitting the new one. it has location points as part of the filter design. if they are not seated the covers will not fit and you will struggle

Find the air intake pipework that runs across the front of the engine and turns towards the rear of the vehicle and terminates in the air filter housing. loosen the fixings on this intake pipework and remove it completely, remove the oil filler cap and plug the hole with a rag to prevent contamination, remove the cover that had the oil filler cap mounted on, this involves the removal of 3 allan screws that are easily visable (more or less in line with the oil filler) then remove another 2 a;;an screws holding the rear of this cover these can be difficult to access as they are close to the bodywork below the windshield, this cover should now lift clear to allow access to the air filter, refitting is just a reversal of the above procedure, it is a good idea to remove any loose dirt before refitting the new filter by using a vacuum cleaner.

Landrover freelander td4 giving excessive black smoke, what ca it be?

Black smoke is generally a fuel mixture problem. It can be caused by lots of things so more investigation is needed. Too much fuel or not enough oxygen will generally cause this.
Check for a blocked air filter or air intake
Faulty Injectors putting in too much fuel.
Faulty fuel pump (again, too much fuel).
Poor timing, again allowing too much fuel.
Also check the EGR valve. This is designed to recirculate exhaust gases for efficiency although they can go wrong causing poor performance and smoking issues.

Low Fuel Pressure on Landrover Freelander TD4

From 53 reg onwards, diesel pump is under R.H. rear wheel arch, hidden by the plastic wheel arch liner. Older versions have combined fuel pump/sender in the tank (under R.H part of rear seat).
You should be able to hear a faint purr from the pump when ignition is turned on but engine not yet running.

Black smoke when accelerating and seems to be just underpowered

Have you changed the crancase breather situated at the rear of the engine by the air filter, cost is about £30 from Landrover, should be changed every 12000 miles, often lasts 60000 miles and then it shows a problem. If not changed the crancase will pressurise and you will get oil coming out of the engine all over the place and clouds of soke from exhaust.
