I have a Ranger that I got in February of this year. We have had a continuing problem with the Fuel Pump Shut-off Switch (Inertia Switch). The switch has "tripped" several times since I got the truck. A few weeks ago the dealer happily replaced it, it promptly "tripped" again, and then yesterday the truck stalled in traffic after crossing over some rough pavement and the switch tripped again. I called and scheduled it to go into the shop next week to have the switch replaced again. Somehow this seems to me to be a fairly important and safety related issue. While driving the truck at speed and in traffic the engine quits without any warning. This has happened to me on the highway at highway speed too. Has anyone else had any issues with this? Are there other places to look to rectify this problem? Thanks in advance - Geof I have a 2005 ranger. I was driving it back to college after spring break yesterday the truck suddenly stops going so i push the clutch in and luckily coast to the shoulder. I had had some trouble with the alternator a few weeks back so i automatically assumed it was that again i paid over 400 bucks to fix it the last time so i wasn't too excited about it so i call the tow truck and he takes me to an auto shop and says he will call me when its done. I got a call today telling me that all that happened was that the fuel switch went out. The mechanic asks me if i hit anything substantial that would have tripped the switch, I told him no i was just driving on the freeway and it died I didn't hit anything no speed bump not even a mouse. Im not too excited if this is going to be a re occuring problem because the road i was driving on has a Speed limit of 80 and most cars travel over that, Im lucky that I had enough space to get to the shoulder i could have easily been hit from behind when i suddenly go from 80 mph to 50 in about 10 seconds.
I have a 2005 Ranger Edge. I had the same problem. I did two things. First I replaced the fuel pump and it worked again for about 2 months. Then it stopped working again so I replaced the inertia switch with a new one from the Ford Dealership. It worked again for about a month. Than it stopped again, so I replaced the wiring that goes from the inertia switch to the main box on the bottom right passenger side. I also put the inertia switch inside the casing on the lower right so it couldn't be kicked. It has been working for 2 weeks now. I hope nothing else happens.
On another note, I had another electrical problem. My speedometer cluster stopped working and my mechanic found loose wires rubbing against metal on the inside. I think the electrical components on these Ford Rangers are just cheaply made. That is the only thing to check for you now. If it isn't the fuel pump or the inertia switch, just check all the wiring from fuel pump to inertia switch to make sure it is all done correctly. Also check all fuses for fuel pump/inertia switches.
Sometimes I say I and mean a mechanic, I am not a car expert, but would like to be.

Hi, I have a 2005 Ranger Edge, and i got the same problem. I think it s a electrical problem, some wires r shorting out or something like that, i m not totally sure about it but my truck has a Lo Jack alarm system and after they installed it, it brought a lot electrical problems such as lights burning out ( exterior and interior ). Maybe i m wrong but i m still looking forward someone that could explain it.
