1985 ford econoline 250 shifting problems

1985 ford econoline e250, ran fine until one day 2 problems spontaneously appeared. 1) the transmission has a hard time shifting at from about 25-35 mph it just revs higher and higher rpm until about 36 mph it clunks over to the next gear. same at 55-65 mph. then clunks. tried changing tranny fluid and ddnt drive for a few days, came out and fluid was on the ground but still read 'ok" on the dipstick. 2) it almost wants to die at stop signs, have to tap gas pedal to keep it from dying. thanks

you may have damaged the overdrive gear, a local transmission shop would be your best bet. for good troubleshoting and estimate.

SOURCE: Hard Shift to 2nd Gear/next gear

Your going to have to get your car scaned for codes. Auto Zone can scan it for you for free and tell your what you'll need to fix it.
It sound's like your VSS Sensor (speed sensor) is not working and your ECM is not getting the signal from the transmission to know when to shift the gears.
Becareful not to burn out the transmission till you get it fixed. The sensor it self is not that expansive and to replace it is easy and takes about 30 min to do.
If you get a P0720 or a P0722 code, then it's your speed sensor. It's an esy fix and Auto Zone can give you instrction on how to change it.
Good luck, it takes about 30 min to change and hope this helps.

SOURCE: 1995 cadilac deville has problem shifting from 1 to 2 gear

You don't have torque converter shudder. You don't even mention that in your original post! You def had a solenoid issue. My 94 STS did the same thing. I only had reverse, 1st and 2nd gear. Wouldn't shift outa 2nd period. It was a $200 solenoid repair. Car had a 160K on it when that happened. I have almost 170k on it now. Shifts and works fine. you don't need the tranny replaces ad josavv63 indicates.

Transmission not leaving first gear

SOunds like the linkage needs adjusting. If it don't catch until it is in first gear, that is why it isn't shifting. Hopefully adjusting the linkage will allow it to catch in drive and then you will shift fine.

Good Luck

Wont shift

check to make sure you did not knock off any vacuum lines and also make sure the transmission fluid is not low and if it smells cooked replace the fluid and the filter because the screen in the filter could be plugged and it is not getting fluid to the torque converter but check the fluid first
