Speedometer and tachometer stopped working

I have a 2004 Pontiac Sunfire and the speedometer and tachometer has stopped working. Could it be the speedometer sensor? And where can this sensor be located?

If the speedo isn't working properly, the first thing to check is the output speed sensor wires on the rear right side (near the bar code) of the tranny case. Follow the wires and make sure it hasn't been cut, pinched or shorted.
If all is well there, take the output speed sensor off. Watch out cause you'll get wet with tranny fluid (Dexron 6). (Be ready to plug it up.) If there are no metal chips or debris on the magnet inside, check it with an ohmeter on the two pins to see what the reading is. It should be around 6 to 10 ohms. If it's not steady, get a new one. Make sure the pins are clean on the connectors.
Apply some white or build grease around the shaft and "O" ring and re-install. Don't overtighten. The bolt is a "tap-tite" and should need only about 5 or 6 ft/lbs torque. (Run it in and give the bolt a quarter turn.)

How do i remove the instrument cluster in my 2003 Pontiac Sunfire

this may sound a little funny, but hands on experience is the best. go to a junk yard and experiment as to how to get it apart. Manuals do not always give you the little details you need to know. I have done this some times and it works out great when it comes to working on my own. You may also fine a good cluster that works at a good price.

Just pull out the 10amp cluster fuse and put it back in. The cluster will pop right back up. My 2004 does it every time the battery goes dead.

Replace instrument cluster

Is your speedometer or tachometer needle acting weird or giving wrong readings? If so it's probably the drive motors going bad, very common for sunfire instrument cluster and speedometers they all need replaced which isn't too hard if you have the parts and the equipment.

If not email me at [email protected] or visit my site at DrSpeedometer.com and I can fix it for you for a good price.

If trans is still shifting its most likely a blown cluster fuse or bad cluster. If you have a check engine light & trans don't shift most likely blown trans fuse or trans vss (speedo) harness at right drive axle broken puple with white stripe wire or light green wire with black stripe
