well it just shuts off. it doesnt slow down first.it shuts off and when i crank it starts back.

  • debramrs Mar 31, 2009

well yes there is a check engine light on but i already did what you are telling me and the code said it was the cam shaft, maf sensor, and oxygen sensor. i changed all that and it still does the same thing.could an air hose cause it to do that?

scanners vary and you need one with freeze frame.does this happen when you yake your foot off the pedal?

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

It sounds like a spark problem in the way it shuts down so fast. A fuel problem would slow down before shutting off. Possibly a loss of spark , Start with spark at the HEI ignition and test the module, pole piece, etc

You will need a comuter scanner attached while driving to actually read the fault. I would have the computer scanned for fault codes, which might help indicate the problem. Are there any SERVICE SOON OR NOW lights coming on while the engine is running. If so , a code would be stored.

when your car shuts off, diagnosis is required as to whether you are lacking FUEL or SPARK. Only then can you begin to investigate.

Check ecm for number 1228253. If it has this one in it you will have a cutting off problem. Gm replaced these with #16198264 The cam sensor magnet on the cam gear will deteriorate and give problems. This will require removal of the timing cover.

Jeep cranks but does not start

Hi, First replace your plugs. Second check ignition coil(s) one maybe bad. replace with new. If all else is good, have your mechanic check the computer codes. (code scanner) Many of todays cars and trucks have computers to run and control the engine. (management system). Good luck

My 1991 oldsmobile eighty eight royale keeps dying when i drive it, I have replaced ing control moduel, fuel pump, mass air flow , cam shaft sensor, timing chain, plugs wires ect. do i need to keep...

With that much already invested, why give up now? How about the crank position sensor-was that replaced as well? For spark control and spark timing, the computer needs inputs from both the cam position sensor and the crank position sensor before it can know when to cut power to the coils for spark to occur.
Before proceeding any further, you should check for diagnostic trouble codes. You would need an OBD 1 type code reader or scanner for your olds. Any stored codes may help you find the problem.
You can test the ignition system by checking for spark on a spark plug wire when the engine is cranking over. Pull the plug wire off a spark plug and put in a clean spark plug into the wire. Lay the plug so the threads are touching metal on the engine somewhere. Have someone crank the engine over and watch for a spark from the spark plug. If you have a blue, snapping spark when cranking, ignition is good.
One last note: since it dies when driving, there is a possibility that you have a malfunction in the pcm-the computer.

What is the reason on why the200 pontiac bonneville ssei shut off while im driving driving

I would look at the fuel pump relay next.
You'll have to figure out if you are loosing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors to proceed.

Car will crank there is no spark have replaced coil and condenser

Test the ignition system output, ignition systems can vary in configuration but operate on the same principal. Ignition systems can consist of a coil, pick up coil, crank angle sensor, cam angle sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, ignition rotor and a distributor and any variations of these components. An ignition coil is a voltage stepper coil that transforms a low voltage (12 volts) signal into tens of thousands of volts needed to jump the gap of the spark plug.

This coil is activated by an ignition module triggered by using the camshaft/crankshaft angle sensor; timing is adjusted by the PCM (computer). This primary electrical signal is generated by the PCM which calculates spark timing by using a variety of sensors including coolant temperature, mass air flow, and oxygen sensors. Go to 2carpros.com for a video on how to check this using a 12v light tool. On the engine repair section search, type, "engine cranks but will not start." If my answer helpe you, please leve good feedback. thanks

I have a 97 dodge ram w/5.9 if it sits i can start and drive it until i shut it off. then I have to wait around 24 hrs before it starts again. It doesn't have spark coming from the coil when it doesn't...

A 'hot' fault is usually associated with an electrical failure of the crank and or the cam sensor. The crank sensor sits near the starter motor on the edge of the flywheel housing. The cam sensor is near the end of the cam shaft on the front (end nearest cooling fan) of the engine. Fundamentally when either the crank or cam sensors fail the engine loses track of when to spark and when to inject fuel respectively. I would change the cam sensor first as a) it the easiest and b) is most often related to hot start failure. his will cost about $30 and take about 20 minutes. If this does not solve the problem move on to the crank sensor. This is about the same sort of cost but will entail a bit more getting at and so budget about 90 minutes. When working on either sensor make sure the engine is cool, getting scalded is no fun.

FIRING ORDER & CAR QUITS WHEN YOU PLUG IN MASSIVE AIR FLOW SENSOR

Hello,

You really need to start with basic troubleshooting. Is there spark to the spark plugs? Do you hear the fuel pump prime during initial Key On & during Engine Cranking?

Why did you change the MAF (mass airflow sensor)?
