2002 Volkswagen Jetta won't start

The battery on my 2002 Jetta needed charging, so I attached a battery charger to the post but connected to the wrong terminals. The charger was not connected to an AC outlet but there were sparks and now the car will not start. What do I check to resolve this problem. does the positive lead from the battery have a fusible link? The engine will turn over but the car will not start. any assistance will be appreciated

If the charger is connected the wrong way round then lots of current will flow and any fuse in the circuit will probably blow.
If the battery charger has a fuse it is likely to have blown if there was a spark. It would then not be charging your battery. A low battery may not quite start the car.
Also If you did not connect directly across the battery there could have been a fuse in the car that the current had to flow through that may have blown. There are quite often a few larger fuses or a fusible link near the battery. They are not always easy to find so look in a service manual or ring a VW workshop and ask where the main fuses are.
It's a bit unlikely to have done any major damage I think.

SOURCE: 2004 Galant Battery Fuse... or Fusible Link

so you reversed the connections and you think you nuked something? Right?

Check all fuses and relays. Replace any fuses that are blown and all relays that look scorched/burnt.
If that doesn't work, take to dealer to make sure the computer and advanced control electronics didn't get fried.

clean battery terminals ,bring battery to be tested after charging, after reinstalling battery run car and test alternator output it should be a minimum of 13-14volts if it is under 13 replace alternator , use a voltmeter set on 12 volt 10 amp dc to check the wire to check is located on the back of the alternator covered with a rubber grommet of course hold negative wirw on volt meter to ground and touch red wire to big terminal on back of alternator while car is running should have 14 volts or at least 13 volts

SOURCE: Volkswagen Jetta won't go into gear from park what

There's a relay on the brake pedal arm that actuates when you press the brake pedal. This releases the lock on the shifter, so you can shift out of Park. VW's are notorious for having issues with this relay. Stick your head down by the brake pedal and you'll see where the pedal arm hits the relay. It's more than likely stuck, and may not need to be replaced. I'm guess you probably have no brake lights either...

Why wont my 2002 jetta start ? get clicking sound no start

It is either your battery not charged enough to crank the engine or the connection at the battery is loose/dirty. I would check connections first.

2012 VW Jetta TDI battery won't hold charge and car only clicks and won't start

You need to charge your battery up more. Either get a battery charger or leave the jumper cables hooked up for a longer period of time.
Your battery was probably completely dead. You might even need a new battery...they really don't like to be completely drained.

Park car 2002 jetta gls 4 door replaced battery no lights inside car motor turns over dont start remote don"t open doors or trunk

You may have an electrical problem with a fuse or a bad ground/connection. try checking all of your fuses, also check the wiring with a volt meter to make sure everything is correctly grounded. If the problem persists take it to a local shop for a diagnosis, they usually dont charge anything to tell you whats wrong.

Hello , It sounds like you may have a very strange grounding wire problem. Do you have an alarm with shock sensor by chance? Check all connections around the battery and make sure all black wires are clean , connected tight. Make sure the battery connections are clean , dry and tight as well. Thank you , Quinn

My 2002 Jetta GLI1.8T will not start. It will

Very likely your battery has gone away. Your alternator is not designed to charge a battery, it is made to maintain the state of charge only. Attempting to charge the battery with the alternator will cause it to run "wide open" and can damage it. A voltage and load test will quickly tell you if your battery is good or not.

Volkswagen Jetta 2002 TDI

Please clarify, Although the alternator light is on, can you start the car? Does it turn over, but not start? If it won't turn over, you 1st need to charge the battery and try to start it. If the light remains on, have your alternator checked, it probably isn't charging the battery. How old is the battery? If it doesn't charge up, it should also be tested to make sure it's ok. Let me know the answers to the above, and let me know what happens. good luck countrycurt0
