When I tried to start my 2000 Malibu, the dash lights and driving lights come on as they normally do. However, when I turn the ignition to the "start" position, the headlights and dash lights go off and nothing happens. The starter makes no sound and the motor does not turn over. The battery is putting out approximately 13.6 amps. Can you suggest a remedy to this problem. Thank you in advance.

This symptom is usually caused by a poor connecrion. Remove the battery cables from the battery, clean them, and replace them tightly. If that does work, check the other ends of the cables for good connections. If all good, it is possible one of the cables has failed internally--under the insulation.

SOURCE: Ignition off, there is no power

Hi,

The no headlight at any position is significant. it indicates that the entire electrical system is not getting B+12. Since there would only be two terminals on the battery and you have checked/confirmed that the negative is body grounded, it would only be the positive terminal. The positive terminal has two (2) connections; 1 would be very big and would go to the starter, another smaller would be the systems B+12. Often this 2nd B+12 wire passes through a fusible link which looks like a wire but is really a big fuse. It would likewise pass through a connector. based on this, you may want to check this fusible link and/or its connector. When in doubt, you can always temporarily replace this with ordinary automotive electrical wire to verify. Should this checkout OK, the next step would be to look for a master/main relay or a master fuse/circuit breaker.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: 2000 Grand Am SE Headlights and Tailights Stay On

Start by setting your auto headlight switch to off if this solves it replace your headlight switch If your car is equipped with daytime running lights there could be a short bridging them with your auto head lights look for broken or frayed wires do this also if you have installed or had someone install an aftermarket stereo or speakers/sub woofer, amplifier. Good Luck with this

SOURCE: '97 Malibu, dash lights don't work

Check your fuses. The dash lights are on a different fuse. Also check dimmer switch. If its not one, then it is the other. Try working dimmer switch quickly back and forth( with the lights on when it's dark so you can see if they come on).

I have a 2000 chevy malibu drove it for a few days then the other day went to start it turned the key no dash lights like the battery or any of the others that usually come on the mileage dont come on...

Did you check all the fuses under the hood? That's where the ignition fuses would be. The same "run" wire to the ignition coils, when the key is in on or run, or the same set of run wires out of the ignition switch both to the dash warning lights and gauges, and to the ignition system on the engine, well they're all the same power source, and more so the computer gets power from the ignition switch being on as exhibited by the check engine light turning on when key is turned to on.
It sounds like the ignition switch is either not getting full power in, or it's not sending power out as it should.
Check your other battery power-do you have headlights? That would be entirely separate from the ignition switch, but it verifies that battery power is getting to the fuse and relay block under the hood. Is the cranking speed normal? not too slow?

Have power wont start

try to start the car. When it doesn't start , leave the key forward the normal 2 clicks. Look for a light on the dash that says security or antitheft. If you see this light. Go to this link.

Also try starting in neutral.

I cant turn my key to the off position on my 2000 chevy malibu ! what is the problem ?

is the car fully in park if it is then u may have a prob with the park lock. In normal operation the key wont turn off all the way if it is not in park check to see if the censor is working or engaging. If all is working correctly then it might be that the tumblers in the ignition lock cylinder are the problem

Anti theft system on my 2000 malibu goes off when driving

Its your ignition switch. Its not recognizing when you turn it to the start position. The little terminals inside the switch get burned and wear down. When mine went out, the whole power to the dash would flicker, even cut out when driving. I actually wired my system to 1 toggle switch for on and off, I kept the anti theft wires attached to the switch. I also have a starter switch, if I fail to turn the key like I'm trying to start the car, the theft light comes on and the car dies right after starting.
