Buzzing sound under car

I just purchased a 01 nissan maxima I thought it had an exhaust leak but then noticed the sound changes with speed only. The noise is still present with ignition off while coasting. What could cause this exhaust like sound? Is is worst at about 35mph

First thanks for the quick reply! I didn't think it was a bearing because it isn't noticeable at slow speeds, also the bearings are not getting hot. It is defiantly not from the exhaust just sounds like the exhaust from a rice burner, but related to the rolling chassis as the sound does not change with engine rpm but with speed only.

  • luke james Jul 14, 2013

Also I do not know if this could be related but i noticed the when accelerating the car pulls quick to the right

  • NOMERCYINSITE Jul 15, 2013

you definately have a problem and sound's like front right wheel check your brake pad's and see if they are worn ex bad a brake line can freeze now let me explain before someone contradick's the brake line has a inter liner whick which will pin hole when you apply the brake it will expand internally and prevent the fluid from flowing back the presseure is applying to the brake enough that it cause's the pad to scrub which in the car could sound like exhaust.this need's immediate attention.my reason is you said it pull's to the right which mean's something is dragging if not the brake lint then the caliper because it sound's like the brake is hanging and not releaseing check all you can check thoroughly and jack the right side up spin the wheel mash brake release then see if the wheel will turn free if not it is the caliper and or brake line

  • luke james Jul 16, 2013

ok i jacked the car and tested the brake and wheel turns free. when i had it jack up i looked at the tie rod end and they look bad i think maybe that is causing the steering problem. and I think your first guess might be right about the wheel bearings I believe it is the rear. Is it a bad idea to drive it for awhile and see if it gets any worse and confirm that it is wheel bearings making the sound.

Hi Luke Great now were getting somewhere I wish I had of ask you to try to move the front tire in and out to check play in the wheel there should be a slight play. Now that you have narrowed it down to a bearing this can be very dangerious some time's it can cause the wheel to freeze up, it can get bad enough to come apart and cause the wheel to come off,. Luckly for you the wheel bearing will warn you with a noise which you have found can be hard to identify. THE FRONT BEARING CAN BE DONE BY A HOME MECHANIC FAIRLY WELL,YOU MUST REMOVE THE BRAKE CALIPER DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE THERE ARE TWO BOLT'S THAT HOLD THE CALIPER ON ETC.bUT LAT'S GET IT NARROWED DOWN AND i,LL EXPLAIN MORE. iF IT IS THE REAR THEN THAT'S MORE INVOLVED AND REQUIRE'S REMOVEING THE AXLE AND PRESSING THE BEARING OFF AND ON. BOTTOM LINE you can cause severe damage to the vehicle which could sky rocket in repair cost. if you will .at this point let's find out what it is exactly it will not be that expencive at this point. JUST A THOUGHT find a car dealer or the dealer you bought the care from and ask how much they would charge for an estimate to check yourm car and repair the problem usually they want your business and it's a courtecy none the less do it right away it's better safe than sorry and this is new to me and I do not want to give information that will cause anyone to get hurt let me know maybe it will be something you can do or not to serious and they can fix..

SOURCE: Speed sensor location on a Nissan Maxima 2000 GXE...

There are two speed sensors one is called a revolution sensor that is located on the case of the transmission. You can take the driver side wheel off and see the sensor on the top of the case of the transmission. A 10mm bolt is holding it in. Easy fix

Water is dripping from under my car

this is most likely condensation emptying from the drain, this is normal. Check to see if the water is green in color or orange, if it is then you have a leaking hose somewhere, this is not normal

Where is vehicle speed sensor located on 01 maxima?

VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR SHOULD BE LOCATED ON THE TRANSMISSION! SOME HAVE A SPEEDOMETER CABLE ATTACHED TO THEM, AND SOME DON'T! ON FRONT WHEEL DRIVE, THEY ARE LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE NEXT TO THE FIREWALL ON TOP OF THE TRANSAXLE! YOU MAY HAVE TO REMOVE THE Y-PIPE TO THE EXHAUST, AND A HEAT SHIELD, TO GET TO IT!

I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima and it is causing me problems. Check Engine light came on about three months ago but drove fine. No loss of mileage or anything. Did not pass smog do to a P2A00 code (O2 sensor...

i have a 2006 nissan maxima 6 spd. when i purchased it there was 89,500. i replaced the clutch disk, release bearing, pressure plate and added a brand new flywheel(from the nissan dealer). a few days afterwards, the check engine light came on with a P2A00 and a P0420. when replacing the clutch kit i had to remove the exhaust system. i thought that i did not correctly install the exhaust system. after many inspections, i did do a good job installing the exhaust system. at this point i replaced the upstream, bank one oxygen sensor(a pain in the rear). i pray for God to lead me to the problem. don't try this at home but i jacked the front of my car up and rested it on jack stands and chock the rear tire. i started the engine and got under the car under the engine. i heard an exhaust leak at the bottom of the bank one, rear catalytic converter. one that catalytic converter, it has a small heat shield tack welded at the bottom. after taking that heat shield off, i found that the two tack welds at the top of that heat shield had broken causing an exhaust leak. THANK THE LORD! after plugging those holes and drive my car normally for the next two days, the check engine light when off. problem solved!

Engine ticking noise on cold starts

Sounds like a stuck valve lifter. I'd use some oil additive for unsticking lifters.
