Very loud "rubbing " sound when driving only

Slid on ice and hit fornt passenger wheel on curb at 15mph literally! wheel cranked to left. 7" chunk out of edge of rim. had to replace with used rim (same size) as tire was ready to come off rim. engine runs/ sounds same. when driving only, there is a VERY LOUD "rubbing" sound yet drives same, no pulling to right or left, inspected for indication of rubbing and obvious body defects under car around wheels and what i could see under hood. nothing noted. did notice while driving, noise stops when wheel is turned even slightly to the right but makes no sense for it to do so when alignment seems un affected. also noise is heard from inside car, not outside. had a friend drive while i stood outside vehicle to confirm. noise is so loud its hard to hear radio, etc. annoyed and baffeled, but so appreciate your help. julie

    RE: clarification request

I guess it would be more of a loud rubbing/ droning sound. it almost sounds like i have a motorcycle in my car! just not quite that loud. still though, there is absolutely no pulling of the wheel to either side when driving. even on the freeway at 65 or 70 mph i can let go of the wheel and it still drives straight. this is whats got me. id totally think alignment issues or bent steering column otherwise but since there is no pulling and it drives straight even with my hands off the wheel im totally stumped.

    sorry, one more clarification:

i don't know much about wheel bearings, but i replaced the whole tire and rim, inspected the old, no malformations in the inside of the rim, also the steering wheel isn't off at all. its totally straight. it was a 7" chunck that busted off my old rim. sorry for the mis understanding. i really appreciate all the help i can get so so much. julie

thanks so so much for your help. ive done alot of reading manuals, and i came up with the exact same thought. waiting for it to stop snowing and blowing so i can lift car, and check out bearing. went and had it priced not too bad but whats really cool is i actually know how to fix it myself if thats what it is. im almost 35, tinkered with everything all my life.. pays to be stubborn and determined :) i love learning how to fix things. its awsome. my sisters and i grew up without a dad, we were so poor, some one had to figure things out its paying off. really though i wouldnt have been so confident and known what to look 4 if it weren't 4 your help. thanks so much! Ill be sure and let you know. julie

You did damage to the wheel bearing i bet it sounds like a airplane sound. also if you steering wheel is off 7"then have front end aligned because this will destroy the tires and they will make noise.

Hello, this sensor is located in the exhaust manifold near the radiator and easily visible from the top, it has one wire connecting it to the wire harness, you will need a special O2 sensor socket to remove it.

Front end alignment is pulling to right and the steering wheel is 7 degrees off to the left, how can i fix this issue myself, i am mechanically inclined?

It's possible to correct for this by yourself by adjusting the outer tie rod ends, but if this all happened by hitting a curb, you need to have the front suspension checked for damage. You may have a bent control arm or damage to the steering knuckle or strut, etc. Have any damage repaired, then get an alignment done professionally. Your tires will thank you (and wear much longer), and you will have peace of mind that your vehicle is safe to drive.

When i drive, it feels like i have little control while the steering wheel feels loose. I also have to turn my steering wheel about 15degrees to the left to go straight. Any ideas?

Sounds as if you have bent some control arms Or even broken the steering gear rack both front wheels must be off the ground to ***** the situation The best way to recognize a bent part if you are not familiar with it is to compare to the opposite side

Humming noise after hitting curb

sounds like the wheel bearing needs to be replaced

1answer

My daughter has a 2006 nissan sentra about 6 months ago she hit a curb with the front passenger side tire we replaced the tire rim but its making a loud humming noise any advise would be greatly...

That loud humming noise you are hearing is the wheel bearing. After hitting the curb the bearing took a hit and became a little wobbly and over time the grease has seeped out and started causing the humming. So just replace the wheel bearing and anything else that might be loose or damaged like the tie rod and ball joints. if those issues are not corrected it might happen again down the road. good luck and glad to shed some light on your issue

Slid on ice and hit a curb..now my front driver side wheel is rubbing the back of the tire well.what is most likely wrong.

You bent part of the suspension. Most likely the lower control arm and will need to get it replaced and aligned. Have the mechanic check the ball joints for good measure when replacing the items.
