Transmission works when cold but not when hot.

Very common Transmission code - solution # 1 check to be sure Fluid is full . If not trans code sent plus will turn on check engine light or service engine soon . # 2 be sure condition of fluid is Good / Not worn out . Fluid must be Red / Reddish in color Cold and When hot- warm still have red / even lighter than when cold .# 3 if a higher than 50,000 mile car used in heavy rush hour traffic during hot weather then change fluid to give it fresh oil / Trans will fight heat better and save you a $$ 2000 repair bill . # 4 most important of all you can save a Trans by adding Lucas Trans treatment it is $ 20 some places but well worth $$ to extend life of vehicle if one in need of saving $$ .This can even be added to existing fluid if color is still reddish .

Ok first buy a Chiltions book for your car it will give you pictures and all the important info like what kind of transmission fluid you need, when to change your filters etc. NO your car should not be running wile changing the fluid! And don't get under it wile it's hot let is sit for an hour before you get under it and touch things if you aren't sure what you are touching there are parts that can burn you badly !! The star screws are called tork screws and take tork drivers to get them out. With a Chilitions and some prep work you can do it!

You pulled the pan and replaced the filter, you have the Transmission control module scanned for fault codes (I Know I asked just want to verify, this is a different test than what Kragen or Autozone does.) Did you do a flush where all the transmission fluid is replaced, just a service only drains a few quarts,the transmission holds around 10. If you have not replaced the filter do so, if you have not had a flush do so. I would suggest you use synthetic transmission fluid, I think if you spent the bucks for the above services you will end up with a working transmission, sure beats the $2500.00 to replace it with a rebuilt. CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL FIRST BUT IT SOUND LIKE YOU NEED A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION PUMP CAN DRAW FLUID THROUGH CLOGGED FILTER.WHEN ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION GET HOT FLUID WILL GET HOT AND THIN ENOUGH TRAVEL THROUGH FILTER SO CAR CAN SHIFT INTO OVER DRIVE.DO A FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Yes it sounds like you have a bad transmission temp sensor.

CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO SEE IF IT IS LOW. THERE SHOULD BE A COLD LEVEL AND A HOT LEVEL. WITH THE TRANS IN PARK AND HOT, ENGINE RUNNING PULL THE DIPSTICK TO SEE IF THE TRANS NEEDS FLUID. WHEN ADDING, MAKE SURE THE PROPER FLUID IS USED. IF THE TRANS FLUID LEVEL IS OK BUT THE TRANS FLUID SMELLS BURNED OR IS VERY DARK THEN HAVE THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED WITH FLUID AND FILTER. If your engine is getting hot, check your radiator for transmission fluid; the radiator has a small heat exchanger that cools the transmission fluid it is located inside the radiator bottom; the transmission lines attach there; also, the leak into the radiator of transmission fluid can "starve" the transmission causing delay in shifting, slipping and, more throttle being needed to engage and, shift.

Many times this is caused by either a sticking electronic shift solenoid in the transmission or the trans fluid and filter need to be replaced, has the trans been serviced, it should have been done at 60,000 miles.

This is not uncommon, chrysler spec say that it may take up to 5 seconds to engage when cold. Make sure your flid is topped up to the proper level and I recommend a trans tune every 50,000 kms. Also, your dealer can do a quick learn, which resets all the factory values(recommended after every trans related repair).
