1995 gmc sierra automatic transmission losing reverse

I recently purchased a 1995 gmc sierra 1500 that had weak reverse gear. Now when I am in overdrive it will not shift from 1st to 2nd gear and it cuts out when I get to about 55mph. Overdrive works well at low speeds. Could this be a fuse issue or do I need to pull tranny and rebuild it?
Thank You.

Jay

SOURCE: 91 gmc shifts in and out of overdive

I had an 89 Suburban that started doing the same thing. Change the fluid/filter and add a quart of Lucas Transmission Fix. See how that does. Ultimately, you are going to have to rebuild or replace the transmission as the problem will only get worse in the end. Mine finally went down completely and cost me about $2700 to rebuild.

The filter has nothing to do with your issues.

Check for a loose or misadjusted brake switch, for the OD issues.

Maybe Electronic,Sensors or Selenoids,on the shift issues.

1999 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 with a 5.3 motor. My 4l60e transmission has no reverse or second gear.

Rather than swapping out, why not get the one you have repaired and rebuilt? Doing swaps with other model years only works reliably a year either way because of changes in the electronics.

My 1995 GMC 1500 V6 Automatic Transmission will not shift into 3rd gear. I have cleaned the wire plugs and replaced the filter. What could be the problem?

Not sure which filter you are talking about, but you should change the fuel filter if you didn't. I assume your fluid level is good?

Check the linkage first. I have had the linkage come loose before. If it isn't the linkage you need a good transmisson man.

Transmission

Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
