Coil spring I have a 2001 nissan altima and yesterday there was a very loud banging noise in the front by the tires. I went by a garage and he said my front coil spring broke. Do you have directions on how to fix this? how much should this repair cost? should struts be replaced for a broken spring? both sides (front driver and passenger)?

If your car has over 75K miles on and the struts are original, I'd have the struts replaced. As for the coil spring, you can probably find a repair manual at your local library. You can get loaner spring and strut compressor tools at most auto parts stores (loaners are free, just have to leave a deposit for the price of the tool).

Repair cost will vary from place to place, but I'd say coil and strut replacement is about 4-5 hours labor. I'd guess a $300-$450 for parts and labor (coil - $100, pair struts - $140)

The "buzzing noise"; I can tell that I am not alone in having this problem but has someone figured out ... I fit does, that eliminates the brake rotors, tires, wheelbearings, CV's etc. ... BUT with an Altima it is probable the pre-cats. Loud humming noise when driving

2010 Nissan Altima clicking sound front driver's side while driving

Since the sound gets louder the faster you go, it sounds like you have a bad wheel bearing. You could try putting the spare on the back and see if it helps. If you can get the front of your car off the ground, spin your wheel with one hand and with the other hand, grab ahold of your coil spring on your strut. If you feel a vibration on the coil, than more than likely you have a bad wheel bearing.

Could be the bearings in your alternator have gone dry and your alternator is about to quit out on you. I had a friend with an 01 altima and we could always hear him coming before we saw him because of this very problem. Changed the alternator out and noise went away. Thanks for using FixYa!

Coil spring

may need alignment after new coil spring (and/or strut assembly)...recommend that you allow a shop to do this...if you are skilled mechanic, you can do it by scribing marks before srut removal and matching marks after strut re-installed.
