My timing belt broke on my '99 Ford Escort ZX2. Please tell my husband how to replace it. Than k you

  • Anonymous Apr 16, 2009

    Hey there,

How about for a 98 Escort single cam, split port?

  • David Shaub May 11, 2010

First, Get a service manual at an auto supply store. All you have to do is line up the marks and put the belt on. The marks location will be dependent on the engine & options. You will need a breaker bar to move the tensioner.

Timing Belt
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1.8L Engine
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the timing belt covers.
Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.
To install:
Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
Install the timing belt.
Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

Make sure the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks.

NOTE: If the timing marks are not aligned, remove the belt and repeat the procedure.

Turn the crankshaft 1 5⁄6 turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the tension set mark, at approximately the 10 o'clock position.
Apply tension to the timing belt tensioner and install the tensioner lockbolt. Tighten the bolt to 27–38 ft. lbs. (37–52 Nm).
Turn the crankshaft 2 1⁄6 turns clockwise and make sure the timing marks are aligned.
Measure the timing belt deflection by applying 22 lbs. (10 kg) of pressure on the belt between the camshaft pulleys. The timing belt deflection should be 0.35–0.45 in. (9.0–11.5mm). If necessary, adjust the timing belt deflection.
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and make sure the timing marks are aligned.
NOTE: If the timing marks are not aligned, repeat the procedure beginning at Step 9.

Install the crankshaft pulley hub, bolt and pulley.
                      Install the timing belt covers.
                        Connect the negative battery cable.

2 litre ford timing belt diagram 2000 escort zx2 (dohc) .is belt failure always catastrophic

This is a non-interference engine. Anyone saying anything different is using an old book. Some Ford dealers might even tell you it is interference. There are reliefs cut into the top of the pistons to clear the valves if the belt breaks. There is a how-to posted here and on Team ZX2 .com

Changed timing belt on my 99 ford escort zx2 car no

if you have a no spark scenario i would check your crank sensor located at the top left side of the harmonic balance pulley.the crankshaft (about 11'oclock) a 2 wire plug with a sensor on it check to see if it is damaged or unsecured. this sensor can cause no spark if not working correctly. This sensor is based of frequency not voltage testing is difficult, just make sure that there isnt too muck air gap. and that it is secured.Lastly may want to check timing possible that the belt has jumped some teeth and she has fallen out of timing. maybe a bad tensioner The coil will adapt i think up to 10 degree, ****** or advance. Good luck

2003 Ford Escort ZX2 2.0L engine knock and no power.

Get yourself a compression tester and remove all spark plugs and proceed to check the compression for this motor the readings should all be above 110 psi, the car may have jumped a tooth on the timing belt and requires a new belt to be installed.
