2000 hyundai elantra will not stay running while driving

Started 2 days ago, car would turn over and not start. Later in the day car started as if nothing was wrong, then a couple hours later, wouldn't start. Did some tests and the fuel pump does go on. Replaced the crankshaft sensor. Now the car starts right up, but today it stopped running on the freeway. I was able to start it right up again. It also died at a stop light. Again, I was able to start it right up. Any suggestions on where to begin looking for the problem?

Funny thing, after diagnosing for days..... gas was running a little low, light came on in our head, could it be bad gas? Put new gas in, and have not had a problem since. Knock on wood.

Go to the dealer and have them check the hood pin switch pad, there is a updated part that is longer to make better contact with the hood pin switch. Also, check the trunk lid stricker to make sure it is not bent, that has got me a couple of times.

The vehicle speed sensor is probably faulty. Have it checked. it's mounted on the side of the tranny.

It might have something to do with your mass/air sensor located on the intake tube. Try cleaning the mass air sensor with the appropriate cleaner and also try cleaning the throttle body with carb cleaner.

The insulation on a spark plug wire or wires could possibly be breaking down. An easy check for this is to start your vehicle at night (make sure you do this in a dark area with no street lights). Open the hood, have someone rev the eng. to around 2500 rpms and check all the wires to see if any of them have spots that are glowing. If there is one doing this, replace it and problem solved. This is just an idea and hopefully I'll be something that simple.

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or a stuck EGR valve. Check all the vacuum hoses to see if it will straighten up. You can pinch them off with a pair of pliers as close to the intake plenum as possible to see if it starts idling better. PCV hoses are also known to get large holes in them and can be a little tough to diagnose if you do not know what to look for.

Also have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. Interesting same thing has gone wrong with mine within two months of yours. Get the crankshaft position sensor replaced. Maybe these just wear out in time. The car will start one day and the next day it will not. It was a puzzle until the check engine light came on this last time. I actually cheered because it meant the computer would register a problem. It cost $220 for parts and labor at the dealership. It's worth it or it will continue to leave you stranded at various times without warning. Since replaced I have noticed my car engine seems to be running better that I didn't notice was off before. Car has been fine so far.

2000 hyundai elantra gas gage stays o e fill it up one day the next after putting 40 miles on run out of gas . just bought it 3 days ago dealer will not do anything to help me get it fix.

sounds like a bad fuel sending unit in the tank, however , i find it hard to belive that the dealer wont take care of that, unless you bought it as is with no warranty, and no work promised

2000 hyundai elantra car cranks but wont turn over just started fine 3 days ago

Did you scan for any trouble codes? Whenever the 'CHECK ENGINE' (Service Engine Soon) light comes on, the ECU (Engine Control Unit) sets a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC). These codes identify the particular engine management system which caused the light to come on. You'll need to use/find an OBDII (On-Board Diagnostic) Scanner to retrieve any code which have been stored in the ECU computer. Afterward, we might be able to help you DIAGNOSE the problem and perhaps fix the problem.
