The AC in the 2000 grand caravan stinks like a barn yard when first turned on. I have had it numerous places to deoderize and it last for a little bit but then comes back. I have also poured vinegar and lysol down the outside air intake by the wipers. this works for a while but the smell comes back. one dealer told me that leaves get into the evaporator coils and rot. This causes the evaporator coild to rust out in small holes. They say what I am smelling is the leak detector put in the freon. I have put the metal sealing stuff in the ac system and it hasn't helped.
Do I have to tear off the dash and replace the evaporater.
You will smell the freon not the leak detector ,some of the stories i hear but thats a new one on me ,anyway i think you might have a dead something inside it or leaves but you will need to remove the dash unit to get at anything .Another common cause is previous owner a chain smoker ,build up of nicotine over time and this forms a claggy film ,horrible ,,,, now one way which might work if you can see both units is a spray with brake and clutch cleaner ,this is highly inflamabe to wait for it to dry before starting car and usinbg blower .

Hi,
I don;t know who told you the coils would leak and let leaves in but don;t let them work on your car.
2 things to do.
1 make sure the drip tube is not clogged up. If it is water will build up and could mold. Should be a small hose coming off the firewall under the car. Just make sur eit is open and clean.
The next thing is to remove the AC/Heat fan and look in there. You can look in there and smell and remove any leaves/dirt you fine.
