It was in a head on collision, she drove it for about two miles immediately afterwards and now it won't start. it turns over fine is there fuel safety shut off or some other kind of crash sensor that could be killing the spark or fuel? I don't know anything about these cars, I usually stick to cummins diesels and older v8 trucks.
Generally speaking, only Ford products have a safety switch or inertia switch for the fuel system. This includes some Mazda models.
I would start with the basics and check for power to the coil and the fuel pump relay.
My name is Wayne, does a 2001 elantra have a emergency shut off switch
An emergency fuel shut off switch is what I meant to say
Same answer applies. Only Ford products used an enertia switch for the fuel pump. If the vehicle is in a wreck something could disable the engine computer but that is a rare thing.

SOURCE: Where is inertia switch for 2005 hyundai sonata?
Inertia switch is located in one of two areas, on the passenger side panels next to the toe kick by the radio. Or up under the dash. It will be a red button that you need to puch in
SOURCE: locate fuel filter, and safety switch to fuel pump
The filter is located at the rear seat, you have to remove it first, then you will see a cap attach with some screws. Inside that cap you`ll find the fuel filter. Before you change the fuel filter you have to release the fuel pressure first. To do that, first find the FUEL PUMP RELAY in the main fuse box located in the engine. Once you located open the fuel door and take off the cap and leave it open. Start the engine, take off the FUEL PUMP RELAY and leave the engine stop itself, when this occurs turn off the key, the you can take off the filter and changed it
SOURCE: Car stalled and won't start again
Sounds like it might be either the fuel filter or the fuel pump, cause if you ran the tank down, you probably had sludge in the bottom of the tank that you sucked into the engine, you can try using a fuel system cleaner, you may have sucked sludge into the injectors running it, Zmax sells a fuel system cleaner, or there is one called RUN RIGHT, I would try putting some of that in letting it sit a few min then after it sat a few to soak in and break down the sludge, then start the car up, kick your idle up to around 1500 RPM do not go higher then that cause you will damage the engine, try that and see if that works for you, if not then I is probably the fuel pump or filter.
hope this helps.

Hello Dan.
You did not mention whether you have a manual or auto trans.
There are two relays. One start relay and and one anti theft relay (if equipped).
If yours is auto equipped the switch is mounted where the shift cable is attached to the transmission.
I do however suspect you have the manual transmission as there is a service bulletin for a no crank problem. Here is the bulletin.
