Tip & How-To about 1999 Ford Escort

Engines with Starting Problems

All engine regardless of manufacturer need three things to start and run. Air, Fuel and Spark, lets look at each one.

Air- this refers to air intake on four stroke engines this intake is created by the piston pulling in air with the intake valve open. You must have a combustion chamber that is sealed, meaning that there are no compression leaks from the head gasket, or from the valves. The valve timing must also be correct, meaning that the intake valve is open while the piston is going down on the intake stroke. Associated parts include the air filter, air intake manifold, intake valves, pistons and intake hoses.

Fuel- this refers to fuel supply, with out fuel an engine can not run, the fuel supply has to be correct for start and run conditions. Associated parts for fuel are fuel pumps, fuel pump relays, fuel pump fuses, fuel lines, fuel injectors, fuel hoses and carburetors.

Spark- this refers to the ignition source provided to ignite the fuel mixture. Spark is generated from an ignition coil and released in several ways. Associated parts to ignition are the ignition switch, coil, ignition module, crankshaft position sensors, camshaft position sensors, spark plug wires, spark plugs, distributors, and ignition points.

If you have a vehicle in which the engine does not run one of these three things are missing, otherwise it would work, so remember to always check the basics first it will lead you to your problem faster and cheaper.

Why does my 1996 1500 pick up truck 5.7l cranks but won't start?

An engine needs three things to run. !. fuel. 2. Spark. 3. Air.
First check to see if you have spark by pulling one of your spark plugs and with the wire on it ground the sparking tip (bottom) of the plug to a metal part of the motor and crank engine. If no spark check coil. If you have spark check to make sure your getting gas into the carb. or fuel rail . Could be a bad fuel pump. Last but not least make sure your air intake and exhaust are clear of any obstructions. a plugged exhaust system can cause a no start.

Starts up for 10 seconds or so before switching off

Theres only three basic things that make an engine run.... spark, air and fuel
It starts, therefore you have spark
It runs briefly, you may not have enough air, check your air filter/intake
It then dies, you may have a fuel restriction or are losing your fuel prime, a leak or a bad seal and its sucking air into the fuel system

intake manifold leak fixed

An engine needs three things to run air, fuel, spark. So check to make sure air supply is adequate. Check fuel supply. Check to see that all air has been bled from the injector rails. Check wiring again . Make sure ground strap is reattached from firewall to engine. Pull off a plug wire and check for spark. If distributor was removed make sure it was reinstalled correctly and it is not 180 degrees off. Recheck all plug together connectors. Hope this helps.
