I have a 2008 Sline B8 Avant Multitronic 2.0TDI 143PS and have just replaced the Michelin 245 40 R18 tyres with a cheap new set I had in stock 225 40 R18. I now have a regular humming noise from the front left wheel when turning right and when braking to a junction. Do you think the Multitronic gearbox dislikes the small downsize in overall wheel diameter or were the Michelin tyres masking another problem ?

Lou,I belive your right. When an axle goes this is the sound they make.
SOURCE: A lot of noise from the front brake discs
Try changing the type of brake pads you are using. It will make a difference on the noise and all of the dirty brake dust that gets on the rims.
SOURCE: rummbling noise at rear wheels
did you change the rims and tires to bigger size or is it stock wheels. I believed your car is all wheel drive, check the rear end transfer case, brakes pad rubbing against rotor, due to sticking caliper. inner tire wall rubbing against shock absorber, bent rim or the wheel bearing going out.
SOURCE: my car picks up a vibration from rear at 60 to 80
Welcome to fixYa !
you might have the rear bush problem cause it handle the cars smoothly, ... moreover check the rims sometimes RIMS get curvy or erected( i dont have the word for it right now , meaning = bends) by jumps or bumps( or even if you cross a speed-breaker in high speed) that causes wobbling .. more over check for EXCELS. sometimes EXCELS cause these problem .
do write back for your problem is solved or did it remain unsolved !!
we are here to help you .!
best Regards
SOURCE: whining noise from passenger front wheel had wheel bearing replaced could it be gearbox
Wierd Wheel Noises:
New bearing is actually good? Take wheel off of the ground, vehicle in neutral and rotate the wheel by hand and see that there are no problems with the bearing, CV Axle, or the brakes. And put some pressure on the bearing as much as you can to make sure it is not binding itself.
More than one bearing has been damaged during installation. I now own a 10 ton press and keep it in my basement for the next time I have to replace my bearings. Thank goodness I always buy in pairs.
Here's to hoping you just identified your problem.
If not, then: Have someone turn the wheel in both directions while watching the CV Axle at both ends, to make sure it isn't the problem.
One more issue: Swap your tires front to rear, and rear to front, and drive to see if your noise changed locations, indicating a tire or wheel problem.
If everything you just checked is working properly, then you know what's next.
Good luck !
