Autozone, Sears, and other shops will check and charge your battery for you, free. They also have videos on starting a car. I use their videos a lot.

Check your battery first, then check your ignition switch, then check your spark plugs and wires.

SOURCE: Brake Light Problem -1997 Chevy Lumina

The ground wire in the trunk area, coming from the brake light harness, might have come off or really loose. Hope this will get your lights working again. Best wishes.

Have transmission service, oil and filtr. .Anywhere but aamco. sounds like valve body os sticking. do it soon.

Starts but won't keep running then won't start

Check your Fuel Pressure and if that is good (over 40 psi)

then check your Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve

and seeing that it is a Mid-90's Chevy.. MAF Sensor is going bad.

If you UNPLUG your MAF and see what happens.... MAF is in the Air Intake with a 4 wire...

1997 chey lumina runs fine until motor warm-up then shut off and won't start until motor cool off

Try getting your transmission solenoid replaced. After I got mine replaced it ran fine after that. That's the exact same thing my Lumina was doing.

I have a '95 Chevy Lumina. First problem, I started having to jump it off basically every morning so I replaced the battery. I didn't have to jump it off for all of about 4 days and then it started...

The body control module is the problem it is drawing the battery voltage down,and causing the lighting malfunction

I have a chevy lumina 1997. It has the passkey in it. I had to replace my starter and my coolant relay, now when I try to start this is what happens. It cranks, it ignites, but won't stay on...it dies....
