My 1998 ford explorer 4x4 while accelerating has a bumping feel

My 1998 ford explorer 4x4 while accelerating moderatly or even hard has a bumping feeling in drivetrain it has 137000 miles but trans. fluid is clean (not burnt smelling) and full. Also it does'nt feel like a slipping but more along the lines of a gear missing a tooth or something. But will not do this when taking off from stop normal.

We had a 1997 Ford Explorer that did something very similar. We thought the transmission was going out, but it was the exhaust manifold gasket. Cost us a couple of hundred at the dealer to get it fixed, but that was a few years ago.

I have a 1998 explorer with 4.0 sohc vin E it shifts fine if you accelerate gradually but when u press down hard on gas like in a get the hell out of the way in traffic situation it feels to be slipping...

if your are expeirencing tranny slippage your tranny is on its way out...its only a matter of time before it goes... you can ride it out until it goes or u can either replace it with one from ten junkyard or get it rebuild.

My 1998 Ford Explorer runs rough under hard acceleration

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.
