How do you reses the check engine light?

Last time engine was serviced the establishment did not reset the service engine light thus the "check engine"l light has come on. Is there a way to reset it? The car seems to be running just fine. I managed to reset the service engine light but the "check engine" light will not go off.

If you bring it back to the mechanic who last serviced it he will gladly reset it free of charge.

You can pull the EFI fuse for 15 seconds. If the check engine light goes out and does not come back on again soon, then there is probably no problem. If the light comes on again immediately, get to a mechanic and ask him to run the diagnostics which will tell where the problems is. My Camry shows this every summer when temperatures rise, especially as the gas tank gets low. The cause is the gas vapor sensor (VSG) which gets stuck. The check engine light will also come on if the gas tank cap is not tightly screwed down.

I cant get the service engine light to go off and I don't have the truck manual

Take your truck to your local auto parts store or repair garage, and have them attach an ODB code reader to your truck to readout the error codes and reset the SERVICE ENGINE light.
Please note that the SERVICE ENGINE light only comes on when SOMETHING IS WRONG. If you do not want it to come back on, you will need to establish where the failure is and fix it.

'service engine soon' light

I think that is scan tool only but most mechanics have the scanners these days so it will be a lot cheaper to go to your local mechanic instead of the dealer. It prob wasn't reset last service if the light wasn't on at time of service.

My Service Engine Soon light lit up on my 2004 Buick Century. Typically, I've had it come on if I didn't tighten the gas cap all the way. Usually, if that is the case, it turns off after starting and...

Do you have a "Check engine" light or a "Service engine soon" light.Could be you are just being reminded to get an oil change as the "Service engine soon" light will come on automatically at a certain mileage after it was last reset.Your vehicle handbook in the glove compartment should tell you how to reset your "Service engine soon light" yourself. If you have a "Check engine" light on,you can have someone read your "codes" and find out what system the vehicle is having a problem with.

"Service Engine Soon" anounces the need of service of your car normally. Please, check your Owner´s Manual and verify the last time you sent the car to service and when, the next is coming according the manufacturer. Service shop will reset the ligth once the service is executed.

Engine light on

The service light has nothing to do with the engine light. It can't be trigged by the ECM.
The service light are only trigged by one of 3 counters (time since last service, engine hours or mileage).

The service light are easy to reset if you got a YM1999-2000 car.
1. Put the ignition on to pos.1 and press down the trip reset button on the instrument cluster and keep it depressed.
2. Put the ignition on to pos.2,
3. When the service light starts to flash then release the trip reset button. Now you have reset the service reminder lamp.

You need to read out the DTC's from ECM to be able to fix the check engine light.

Oil Change Reset
A press of the OIL CHANGE RESET switch will allow you to
reset the oil life feature to 100% (or your Personalized Oil Reset
Percentage). After you have the oil changed, you must execute
the following procedure. Press the OIL CHANGE RESET switch
and hold for five seconds as the M/C counts down for five
seconds. After a successful reset the Message Center will display
“OIL LIFE RESET TO 100%.” If you have established a
Personalized Oil Reset Percentage, the display will show that
percentage instead of 100%. To ensure accurate oil life
indicators, perform this reset procedure only after an oil change.
Your Personalized Oil Reset Percentage allows you to establish a
smaller oil change interval than the manufacturer’s
recommended interval. To establish your Personalized Oil Reset
Percentage perform the following procedure:
1. Press and hold the OIL CHANGE RESET switch and press
the RESET switch while the display is still counting down
the 5 seconds to reset. The display will change to “START
OIL LIFE AT XXX%.”
2. Press the OIL CHANGE RESET switch until the displayed
percentage is the Personalized Oil Reset Percentage that you
desire. Your choices are 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%,
40% and 30%.
