My 2004 toyota corolla with 85000 miles idles weird while in park. It will idle at 800 rpm for a few seconds and then jump to 1000rpm for a few seconds and does this consistently. It does this all the time, warm or cold. No problem when I drive it. Only happens in park.
If you dont have any trouble codes, this usually occurs when the idle air control valve (IAC) is going bad.
If your check engine light is on, the vehicle computer has to be scanned to retrieve the trouble code. There is an OBD11 (2) connector under the drivers side dash where the scanner is plugged into. Once the code has been retrieved then a diagnosis can be given. You will have to take your vehicle to a reputable repair shop for this to be done. But because of the symptoms you have given it seems like the IAC valve is bad. Hope this helps

This also happens when yiou have the air conditioning on, when the pressure on the high side drops too low it will kick the idle up to 1400rpms to run the Air conditioning compressor. This will occur very often, but you can also have a bad IAC Valve or even an EGR Valve(Exhaust Gas Release/Recirculation.) They should be cleaned, along with the MAF sensor(Mass Air Flow) located on the Air Intake tubing after the air filter, that can be cleaned with MAF/MAP cleaner. just spray and wipe.
