2004 Chevy Trailblazer, 72,500 miles. 1st the tachometer would not return to zero with engine turned off, then start reading eratic with engine running at highway speeds , now reads all the way to the right. Now speedometer is doing the very same thing that the techometer did. At this time, speedometer is ready 120 MPH .
"The Fix" works...I would have not believed it untill I did it.... Start the car in reverse and about 5 times later it reset the speedometer back to zero.....wow!
Remove the very first the 15 amp fuse and put it back(under the hood) it resets the speedometer and other instruments.works every timePost Solution
I can help with the gauge problem, just fixed a Trailblazer instrument cluster gauge this week. Check my site here DrSpeedometer.com free shipping and 12 year warranty.
Ron is right. Bad motors are common if it's one or two guages, and not all at once. GM got a bad batch from their supplier. Check ebay or Mr. Whizard for someone to fix. I can't vouch for any of them though (no experience with them). You'll need to pull the instrument cluster yourself.
Chances are very good that you have a bad stepper motor. There are several forums on the internet that will show you how to repair the problem yourself. Good soldering skills are a must.
SOURCE: Both speedometer & tachometer not working, both reading wrong.
There was a recent class action law suit settled with GM for this exact problem. You can google gm speedometer lawsuit and get lots of information. Unforutunately for most people I think the warranty was limited to 7 years and 70,000 miles. Which isn't a lot of miles for most people.
If you car isn't covered by the warranty there is a way to "reset" the speedometer.
You can turn the ignition slowly like you are going to start the engine. There is a very small "dead" space where you will see your guage lights go off.
What you want to do is cycle the ignition switch from off to that dead space. Each time you do it your stuck speedometer will move towards zero about 10 mph. So if its stuck on 40 you will have to cycle it at least 4 times.
At first you will probably actually hit the ignition and the engine will try to start.....just release it and try it again.
I know this because I have a 04 avalanche with 80,0000 miles and it has this problem about twice a month.

Both speedometer and tachometer not working, both reading wrong.
Both the speedometer and tachnometer on my 2004 Trailblazer won't return to zero...after removing the battery, it resets to zero. It seems that if I accelarate quickly or have fans on high going faster than 70mph this problem starts up again. Any suggestions how to fix?
I had the same problem twice - once around 50,000 and the again around 100,000 miles. One by one all the gages in the instrument cluster go crazy until the voltage spikes and dips finally cause them to go out completely. This car is notoriuos for having unstable voltage going to the instrument cluster. Chevy has yet to recall this even though it is a common problem. Both times the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced - about $150 in parts and $300 in labor ( the dash needs to be disassembled)
My speedometer in my 2004 Chevy Trailblazer, crapped out on March 28, 2009 while on the highway. However, after reading a blog, I was able to fix it by putting the gear in reverse without the engine on and then trying to start the vehicle. The mileage on the Trailblazer at the time of speedometer failure was: 52,198. After applying 'the fix' the speedometer has worked. So far, so good. Went on the NHTSA web site to file a complaint since there has been no recall for this problem. Sad to think that a vehicle not even 5 years old and that retailed for $37K and still making payments has not been recalled. Shame on GM! File a complaint to the NHTSA: safecar.gov
Yes. I too have the same problem. No speedometer, no tach, and no gas gage. I have to rest my mileage everytime I fill up my gas tank.
GM took the manufacturers of the instrument cluster to court and won. Close to $100 million. Why haven't we seen a recall?
I will never buy another GM vehicle! I own two.
tachometer does not work
I have the same problem.
