Lucas oil treatment

2001 Elantra ... Automatic transmission. For a while now car has been shifting kind of weird. Please see below; 1. Car goes from Neutral to reverse to drive without any issues 2. When driving the car revs at 3000 rpms and hesitates and then it shifts fairly hard, sometimes it doesn't shift at all until you take your foot off the gas and then re-engage the gas pedal. It tends to shift fairly hard, almost with a lurch forward. 3. On one occasions it didn't shift at all, and we drove home in limp mode. 4. Next day it shifted as described in point number 2 and we haven't experienced the non-shifting again. 4. Check engine light is on, but its been on since we owned it... mechaninc said it was nothing to worry about... but I worry there could be a legitimate reason why its on now 5. Symptoms get worse after driven for a bit, especially on hot days Things I have done; *checked ATF level - it seemed to be a little down, so i added a little ATF but it hasn't made a difference. *I noticed the ATF is kind of brown with a reddish tint, however it doesn't smell burnt to me, but it doesn't smell sweet either. I am no expert, but I do like to research, :-). Some of the possibilities that I theorized could be the problem; - Input/ output sensors - ATF needs to be changed - TCU - Transmission is going I realize it needs to be taken to an expert, but I was just curious if you have any ideas. Any advice would be much appreciated. Kind Regards, Jamie

You have a failing transmission, that is abundantly clear.

SOURCE: transmission won't engage/ no drive or reverse at all

It's definitely cheaper to buy a trans from a wrecking yard than to have yours rebuilt. Before you do anything though. Did you make sure that the trans fluid level is full? I know this may be a stupid question, but I had to ask. The speed sensors job is to tell the speedometer how fast you're going...not related to your problem.

SOURCE: Auto Transmission 2000 Rodeo

It seems that the trans is slipping. The smell is from excess trans flood. If Trans is over filled, it can rupture seals and cause leaking that can get on the exhaust and burn.

SOURCE: Transmission won't shift fron 1st, 2nd or 3rd correctly!

I'm no expert but it sounds as if you might have some moisture (water) contaminating your tranny fluid. I'd first try having it drained, flushed and refilled with fresh fluid. Preferably after it has been warmed to room temperature - -2 brrr.

2001 hyundai elantra goes in2 reverse but won't go backwards all other gears r perfect

Most automatic transmissions have a separate belt for reverse and all forward gears, The reverse belt is commonly lighter duty that the forward belt (some Chryslers were affected so much it was advised to not shift into reverse until the engine had warmed up and the automatic choke idled down) Thus your car would be in "reverse" but with no motion getting to the gears.

1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied.
1.4. Engine idling.
1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF.
1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test.

Having problems about 3-4 times a month with tranny! Hard shifting, the car rev's up and then slips a bit and final finds the right gear! Do I need a new tranny? My car has 153,000km and has already had a...

you may only need a transmission fluid and filter change. suggest you add lucas tranmission treatment to this change also,it works great for stuck or sticky valves in transmissions. i use this myself,i have a toyota van that has 200,ooo miles on it. i also have a ford explorer with 500,00 miles on it. lucas is a great product for oil, transmission, rear end. i'm not promoting it,it simply works!! but let me suggest something else also, your transmission is electronic, which means the cars computer tells it when to shift gears. check engine light on? if so, you need to take it to garage and have it code read. i can recommend a new tranny but please try the lucas 1st it costs 12.00 the filter around $20.00 plus labor, it, worth the effort. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com if i can help you further, please repost your question and there are several experts who will be happy to help!! merry christmas!!

Slow pick-up, high rpm

It seems as though the Transmission clutches are slipping if it's an automatic or the clutch is worn if it's a standard. If it's an automatic transmission check the Transmission oil it should be clean and no burnt smell. You will easily recognize burnt oil by it's nasty smell.

Car won't drive forward or in reverse

this is the speed shift solenoid and a possible faulty transmission filter as well. the best thing for this issue is to pull the tranny and check for filter clogs and change the shift solenoid.
