Engine Starts But Transmission Does Not Engage

I recently got a new engine put into my Camry. The engine runs good and sounds great, but the gears do not engage. Also, when in neutral and car is revved to 3k rpm, I put it into drive and it drops significantly before climbing back up. The shift cable is connected and there is the correct amount of transmission fluid. Any ideas?

Sounds like a linkage issue, if not the tranny itself.

SOURCE: fluid leak, gears won't shift/engage and car begins stalling

Some of these have a small dipstick on the top of the transmission it to check and fill. Do not over fill this it shouldn't take to much to fill. You can try that and see what happens. Transmission fluid should be pink or redish in color if its dark or has a burnt smell then you have a problem. See if this information was help full.

SOURCE: Transmission won't engage in Toyota Tercel

pop off the cap on your clutch reservoir, if it's empty fill it up, leave the cap off, and then pump the clutch 20 times to try to get air out, that should work.

Did you bleed the air out of the system, also if empty there a leak some where. bleed system and check for leak's, look around for wetness could be a bad slave cylinder, clutch master or the line from clutch master to slave cylinder.

Sounds like the clutch is not releasing properly. If it grinds when trying to delect reverse this will be the case. It may be a hydrolic fault or the clutch itself. Check to see if the slave cylinder rod is actuating when the pedal is depressed.Check for loss of fluid.

2001 Camry 5 speed. It starts but it will not move. I can change gears without pushing in clutch. One mechanic said it was clutch and a different one said transmission is out. Which is it?

The clutch is not transferring power to the gearbox, which then is not turning, so that you can select gears without the clutch.Possibilities are
- clutch assembly has failed, possibly by the splined driven plate hub coming adrift
- clutch driven plate has become very worn and has lost contact
- slave cylinder has stuck through corrosion (assuming a hydraulic clutch) and is holding out the clutch independent of the pedal. This can be determined by watching it while someone depresses and raises the pedal.

I think it is unlikely the transmission input shaft has fractured.

On my 2002 nissan altima it won't go in gear by pushing the clutch but if I cut the car off and put it in first gear and crank it it lurches forward what could be causing this and why won't my car go into...

When your engine is running at say 1200 rpm, the transmission is at zero speed with the clutch depressed. When you engage the clutch the first gear is still at zero speed trying to engage with a 1200 rpm crankshaft. In a normal transmission, they have a "synchronizer" which speeds up the gear to match the speed of the crankshaft so the gears mesh smoothly.
When you turn off your engine, the crankshaft is at zero rpm so it can go into gear with the zero rpm transmission. Bottom line...you have a problem with your synchronizer on your transmission. If you are lucky...a transmission shop could fix it without an overhall. But it needs to be diagnosed because it doesn't sound good.

Transmission hesitation

I suspect you have a clogged transmission filter. The problem could also be a bad fluid pump. These transmissions are designed to be 'disposable' meaning when issues such as these occur, it may be cheaper to replace the trans than to fix it. First I would have the transmission flushed, then have the filter changed. If the problem persists, then replacing it may be your only option.
Hope this helps and thanks for using Fixya!!

Transmision wont go into gear no drive indicator

Did you replace the lost transmission fluid and rechecked the oil level after starting. Secondly if the torque converter moved forward without you knowing it, the converter may not be properly connected to the front pump and it won't be working Lastly ensure that all electrical wiring connectors are properly connected and not loose.

I own a 98 Model Toyota Camry, and when its on Reverse gear it sounds ok but on Auto drive, the engine and in fact the entire car starts vibrating terribly....What should i look out for here?

You need to check the engine and transmission mounts. Have someone sit in the vehicle, and with the engine running get them to put in into reverse, then into drive with their foot on the brake. If the engine rocks quite noticeably there is a broken/worn engine/transmission mount

1998 c1500 dies when I put in gear What could be the problem?

If the engine starts and runs fine in Park, try Neutral as well. If it runs and holds steady IDLE at both positions the issue is with your transmission. In the C1500 silverado series/GMC they had a period of bad trannys. In your case it sounds like the torque converter has gone bad and basically when you engage in gear its preventing your engine from turning over, thus the die. Its an easy diagnosis using above, but the fix is costly. A new transmission for these trucks run about $2300 or more to be installed. If you are able, a local mechanic may install a used one from a junk yard a lot cheaper... issue is there you have no warranty. So if this is an everyday driver/primary vehicle I would trust a transmission shop. Otherwise find your local trusted guy and ask them about a second hand job, or a rebuild.

94 Grand Prix 3.1-Car won't go into any gear? It starts and runs and it even sounds like the shift lever is moving properly. The transmission is pretty new and we just recently rebuilt the engine and it...

first thing is to make sure trany fluid is full, start engine and check while in park,if oil level is good then i would have to say trany is bad, usually the motors are pretty good, those cars are famous for trany problems take it to a trany shop and have it checked out. good luck.

New engine for '92 Camry wagon?

a new engine is $25-35,000 dollars(if Toyota even has them) The rebuilt engines are very good. 3 yrs-unlimited miles on repairs/replace engine. Get a name brand engine like Jasper or Atk or BulletProof or Gopher. These ARE Toyota engines rebuilt(sometime better than original) The transmission has evidently been a great one(mine has 185,000 miles).

You've done great on this car. But to replace engine and transmission; you looking labor and parts:$7-8,000. If you fix it, it will last forever, and you'll know it's good.

Or you could buy a certified used Toyota, and buy an extended warranty.

The only other thing is to buy new-$20-25,000 for a new Camary v/6 ( I don't know if they even make the wagon anymore)

I hope this has helped. Good Luck with whatever you decide.
