If oil level is correct, you could install a mechanical oil pressure gauge to insure you actually have good oil presure. If all is well, change oil pressure sender unit.
The sending unit was my guess...Could be the oil pump going bad...Or even a to good brand oil filter restraining the oil from recirculating...I've seen it happen..
Have you replaced the sending unit for the oil light yet, do that now and that will likely fix the problem. The sender will be near the oil filter most likely.
first thing check is the engine oil level.if oil level okay check oil pressure should be for the 4.2 engine oil pressure should be 12 psi @ 1200 rpm for the 5.3 oil pressure should be 18 psi @ 2000 rpm if oil pressure good problem in the oil pressure sending unit. if oil pressure is low problem faulty oil pump or worn crankshaft bearings if oil pressure low engine will have rod knock.make sure you are using correct oil viscosity if oil too thick you will have low oil pressure oil too thin you will loose oil pressure.
I would first check the oil pressure with a "wet gauge" to verify what the actual pressure is. There could be a problem with the gauge itself. If not, you may have a clogged pick up screen, or stuck check valve in the oil pump.
Change the oil sending unit to see if the sending unit is at fault,if this does not fix the problem, then the main, and rod bearings in the engine are worn.
