I have a 03 Galant ES. When I turn the temp knob to cold and use the AC it makes a clicking sound, when I turn it back to heat it makes the same clicking sound and blows cold air most of the time. After a day or two on heat it will come back on but I can not run the fan higher than two or it goes back to cold air. Also while driving my temp gauge is normal but when sitting at a stop light or idle it gets hot but not to redline. I bought a new thermostat and I am also not sure where that is located to see if that may be the problem. Is it under the batter and battery housing? Any ideas?
Heres the answer for the clicking sound
I had the exact same problem, yes it was the heater control valve, the repair was 285.00. The tech that replaced it told me it is a common problem for the Galant. He said that if you keep your temp selector on either all hot or all cold that it keeps constant pressure on the plastic gear teeth in the valve. As they break off one by one you begin to hear that clicking noise as the dont catch. When you finally break off the last one it stops working.
According to him if you always leave the dial at least one notch from fully hot or fully cold you will not experience a failure of the switch
Is the cooling system full? Have you bled it?
SOURCE: Heater not dispersing hot air
There ia an actuator that controls the flap to change from hot to cold. You have to pull the bottom part of the dash and the whole blower motor housing. The part you are looking for is located just behind the radio and has an arm that goes into the heater core line. That is the piece you need. Its around $165 dollars and a dealer only part. And hope you have someone that can do it because mitsubishi charges over $500 in labor.

ok here we go and you aren't going to believe it...
I replaced the thermostat step one
I noticed that I had a small leak at the engine side of upper hose fixed that by taking it off and cleaning it and putting the hose back on Step two
then while refilling the reservoir with coolant i found that the hose that was supposed to be in the fluid was curled up on top and not sticking down in the fluid where it should be.
played with the hose until i got it to fall down in the reservoir where it should be Step 3
I started the car with the radiator cap off and let it run until it got to normal operating temp. and keep filling the radiator with fluid until the level stayed constant. Then put the cap back on and test drove. Everything worked fine haven't had that much heat in awhile and it kept blowing hot even when i stopped and let it idle for ten min.during test drive. Checked reservoir when I got home and had to add a small amount of coolant but not much.
I really think that the hose in the reservoir not being in the right place and pulling air into the system instead of coolant is the real culprit of this drama, but i replaced the thermostat to be safe.
