1993 Toyota Camry - Tail lights don't work / brake lights do?

I hope that someone can help as my issue on my 93' Camry LE 4cyl.

Long story short....my instrument panel lights were out, I found that the fuse controlling these lights had blown. During the process of replacing the fuse, the ignition was turned to the "ON" position; thusly causing a spark blowing the new fuse when plugged in. I plugged in a new fuse...without the Brain fart blunder I now have a new issue.

I know have no rear lights or license plate lights when the headlights are on . When the brake is applied, ALL tail lights illuminate as normal (no license plate lights of course), when I let off the brake, the rear main tail lights go out and the only light in the rear comes from the red markers at the extreme corners.

After troubleshooting at the local mechanic, the lamp failure box in the trunk was burned out (opened the yellow box and one wire was burned completely) I purchased a new one on Ebay for $24.00 (all numbers matched perfectly) I installed it and it didn’t fix the issue. When I unplugged the module, it was smelling slightly burnt. I opened it and nothing was burnt out but I purchased another just to make sure.

What do I need to do to resolve this? Anything I need to do before plugging in the new module? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I cannot pass inspection without license plate lights or the main rear lights. Don’t think I have burned wires as I would assume the lights wouldn’t work at all.

I’m stumped.

Thank you in advance

    Thanks Toyota Ed-

Would burned wires still allow the Brake lights to work?

The fuse popped due to having the ignition on when the new fuse was installed? I researched on the internet and this is very common if the power of the vehicle is on when replacing a fuse.

Of course I am the novice seeking expertise :)

If the wires are burnt, what is the remedy to try?

If the wires are NOT burnt, what is the remedy to try.?

I have yet to check the license plate bulbs to see if they are blown, could these bulbs be the issue? ALL other bulbs are working?

    Thank You so much

You may indeed have burned wires. That is why your fuse popped. Open the trunk, and follow the wiring harness down & under the back window, down the driver side of the trunk arm.. Remove all of the tape and protection, and see is the red / green wire is shorting out. Let me know what you find.

Dude the wires at the trunk inside break from opening and closing. you must peel back the wires covering to expose and fix these wires.

Tail lights work but not brake lights 93 toyota camry

The brake light side of the bulbs is powered by the brake switch and travels thru the turn signal switch.
If the third brake light works, I would guess the problem is in the turn signal switch.
