Brake lights on both sides are out. 2008 jeep liberty limited. 3rd light above hatch works. Tail lights work. Blinkers work. License plate light works. Bulbs are good. Replaced the brake light switch..still have the problem. I'm stumped....I checked the fuses for "exterior lights" (one fuse for the rt, one for left) and they seemed good. What do I try next? Bought the car new 4.5 years ago...been pretty easy on it. No aftermarket changes.

on all cars, it goes in to harness,and then usually the left light on body and if that lamp works that means the wire is broken
from 3rd to left light (2 wires there)
the factory service manual covers the details. of all harnesses in cars.

i would suggest checking your fuses,

I had this problem with my 2007 Honda CRV -- all the lights worked EXCEPT the tail/running lights and the license plate light. The other tail lights worked -- brake, reverse, indicators, and hazards. Front headlights also worked, but when the headlights went on the back tail lights did not (not to safe for driving at night!!)
The fuse was #15 in the interior fuse box (under the dash driver side) with the label "small exterior lights" ( also check fuse #19 labeled "small lights main"). The cause of my problem, I believe, is a bad or lose wire in my license plate light.

THAT RIGHT IF BRAKE SWITCH BAD NO BRAKE LIGHT WILL WORK.SPRAY ELECTRICAL CLEANER IN BULB SOCKET BULB SOCKET COULD HAVE OXIDATION AND CORROSSION CAUSING POOR CONTACT.

It does sound as though the trailer connection is the source of the problem, check to see if the wiring has been resting on the exhaust pipe and melted through, shorting the wires. Also check if it is squashed or damaged anywhere. Failing this you may have to pull the trailer connector apart and see if the wires have come out inside and are touching, this can happen if the trailer connector is pulled hard.

IF YOU ARE USING RIGHT BULB AND REPLACED BULB SOCKET.YOU HAVE BROKE WIRE OPEN WIRE SOMEWHERE BEFORE OR NEAR LIGHT BULB SOCKET.

theres usually a pressure switch behind the brake pedal, sometimes the plastic hex nut rattles loose and you have to retighten it.
