So I'm trying to program a keyless remote for a Toyota Highlander 2001 but I don't have a master key that is already programmed. Do I need to have a master key in order to program it? Please explain in detail. I'm new to cars and technology. Thank You.
What key color black or grey each color key programs differently.need to know key color.

black key is the program key. insert programmed key into ignition switch.within 15 seconds press and release accelerator pedal 4 times. with in 20 seconds.press and release brake 5 times remove the black key from the ignition switch.within 10 seconds insert grey key to be programmed into ignition switch.within 10 seconds press and release accelerator pedal once.immobilizer warning lamp will flash. after 1 minute immobilizer warning lamp will extinguish. do same procedure if you going to program another grey key. to exit programming mode remove ignition key and press and release brake pedal at least once within 10 seconds or wait 10 seconds.you can only program 3 grey keys no more.
let me know if you talking about just programming key or programming the remote alarm central lockingsystem.

Also, what do those instructions accomplish? Will it program a master key? Or will it program a remote keyless entry?

If the remote is generic you will need the factory remote to "clone" the signal to the new remote.
With your oem pontiac remote you may need to visit any GM service center to have the remote set to the cars receiver. There are literally 100,000 different variables GM uses to ensure one remote can't work the wrong car. A typical key programming will run you between $30-$60 depending on how much greed the technician has. Some good technicians will do this job for free simply to make a customer happy so you may wish to call around.

1. Start with the key out of the ignition, drivers door is open all others closed and
drivers door is unlocked.
2. Perform these steps within 5 seconds.
A. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
B. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
3. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into the ignition(Do NOT Turn) Pull key out.
4. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Close then open the drivers door.
B. Close then open the drivers door.
C. Insert the key into ignition and leave it in ignition.
D. Close the drivers door.
E. Turn the ignition to ON (Do NOT Start) then back to OFF.
F. Remove the key from the ignition.
5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should lock then unlock automatically
indicating successful entry into programming mode.
Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point.
6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds.
A. Press the lock and unlock buttons on the remtoe simutaneously for 1.5 seconds.
B. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons,
Press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Within 3 seconds, the door
locks should lock and then unlock once indicating successful programming. If
the door locks cycle twice, repeat steps A and B in step 6 as the remote was
not accepted.
C. Repeat steps A and B in step 6 for each new remote.
7. Open drivers door.

If it is the facyory installed keyless remote then you will have to take it to the dealer to be programed remeber to take all remotes with you. If it is an after market system respond back with make and model

the remote s faulty then key fob will not get programmed.
Insert
the key in ignition. Turn the key to on position, and cycle the key three times
off-on-off-on-off-on. Then with the key fob remote select your remote and then
try to operate the vehicle with remote.
These
are just the basic procedure, but sometimes it will not help.
On
that case dealer is the only option.
