Try unbolting the female section from the car floor and beating it against the floor while it is upside down. My car had the same problem when my daughter dropped potato chip crumbs into the connetor. You can also try running hot water inside the latch (once it is out) incase someone spilled soda in the latch.

a lot of time when a seat belt buckle will not lock it is because of something down it side of it spray some wd 40 into buckle if this does not work a new buckle is needed. replacement is easy the hardest part is removing seat it get to it which is not that hart also
Have the same problem in my 98 Toyota Rav4. I squirted the female buckle (bolted to seat, not holding strap harness) with wannabe WD-40 lubricant from the $1 store, and it seem to have solved the problem. I'm guessing the spring mechanism is worn out, which is why the harness buckle won't lock. Another solution is to replace the female lock buckle with an identical part from the used parts junkyard store.
The seatbelt light on the dash stays "on," even when everyone has their belt on, but I don't bother servicing that. If yours have an audible alarm instead of an indicator light on the dash, locate the source of the alarm sound and disconnect the wires to silence the sound.
Hi Ann, Try going out to the car now and gently pulling it. If it has not released, take hold of the belt and try pushing it even further into the retracted position. That should unlock it. Regards John
Try squirting some type of penetrating oil down where the belt inserts into the lock, then while pushing the release button as hard as you can, wiggle the belt latch up and down as hard as you can. Personally, I like SiliKroil penetrating fluid.
eremove seatbelt cover, locate the safety lock lead or metal at the bottom of seatbelt assembly, remove the plastic roto that locks , push slightly teh belt and if u think lock is release, slowly pull the belt.
That just happened to our 05 equinox. We have car seats so one of the seats was reclined just a bit. This will cause the seatbelt to lock. We took out the car seat, folded down the other seat and folded it back. It cause the locked seat to release and unfold.
thank you for this info, I will try this later
