I just replaced the battery on my 1997 ford contour and alternator (both were bought brand new) although the battery is being dranied.
I've put in hundreds of alternators sometime a new one doesn't work properly you heed to check the voltage output of the vehicle running to see if it's charging or simple remove the negative battery cable while the vehicle is runnig, if it keeps running the alternator is working if it's dies it's not but you need to know the voltage output most vehicles it's 13.5 min.
Bills right for the most part, if the truck stays running after the negative cable is pulled it could be the alternator, it could also be a sensor. It's like a two dollar part but can act just like the alternator. You can also have a loose wire somewhere that is causing the battery to drain. Sometimes if you install a car stereo or something and cross wires it can cause the battery to drain too.
