Crank shaft position sensor is bad. This is the most common failure. Its location is on the rear drivers side of engine, where the transmission bell housing mates to the engine, only one small bolt and a two prong electrical connector hold it on. Usually will not throw a trouble code. If you remove it you can test it with an ohm meter, will have an erratic reading or read open loop, can malfunction intermittently or permanently after parking vehicle and won't restart. Applying some heat source to it during ohm testing with a hot air heat gun will usually cause the sensor to read open loop if your not sure if its bad or not. This reply is probably way to late, but I just happened to come accross it while online. Harry (master certified MBZ diagnostic tech)

Hello Haq!
Could it be the key just needs re-coding? maybe you are worrying to much as £177 would be about right as that would need coding etc., Try phoning your local Merc dealer or take the key and V5 to them for coding (Hopefully)
Good Luck!

SOURCE: e320 car key doesn't work
I had the same problem with my 2001 E320. Roadside assistance came to my house and said it was a problem with the key. Ordered a new key (cost about $220 from Keys European in Van Nuys, CA) and the key worked. When I went to dealer to pick up the key, I spoke to a service consultant and he said that hes seen that problem before and replacing the key wont do anything (even though it did work). He said something about a ESI (something like that) and said that parts only on that cost about $600. So first thing you should try is replacing your key. Hope I helped.

Did you try jacking up the car at the front then wiggle the steering as you turn the key? Did you try a spare key? Spray inside the mechanism with WD40. Try putting the key in at different depths and turning.
The lock cylinder is a replace only item.
