Is the base fuel pressure the same hot when it is cold, and so is the spark weak when the engine is hot ?

Testimonial: "fuel pressure is always 60+ has new ac delco plugs wires and cap-rotor"

fuel pressure is always 60+ hot or cold, spark is strong, also tried a crank pos sensor to no help

  • Anonymous Jun 17, 2013

also truck runs great after it starts, it seems to take 3 times to crank it over before it starts

That sounds like low fuel pressure such as the pressure draining off back into the tank, but it that were the case it should be hard to start cold too. It has to be fuel or spark. If you know for a fact fuel pressure is psi BEFORE you crank it hot, it would have to be a spark problem such as a weak coil or module. What would happen if you sprayed carb cleaner into the throttle body before you cranked it ? That would tell you for sure if it does not have enough fuel.

Another possible cause would be a venting problem with the gas tank. You could have fuel pressure but very little volume. Once the engine starts the computer vents the tank to the vapor canister.

Hey there boatright33,

A few things things immediately come to mind.

There may be a problem with the engine controller. You could check the ODBII onboard diagnostics. Auto part stores will usually do this for you at no cost.

When you pulled the ones that were/went bad, how did the filters look? Could there be particulate matter still in the tank causing them to fail.

I always put this one off until last. Check the injectors. Are they gummed up?

Let me know what you find out
Mike

1983 oldsmobile cutlass supreme wont start

I had some issues when I changed my olds 307 to a slightly modified olds 350 rocket, it would start fine cold, but hard cranking or slow, painful cranking when hot. Alot of it was the carbureator was allowing too much or too little fuel into the engine. I rebuilt the carb twice. The first time I didn't have a full understanding of float level drop and measuring as far as bending the brass tangs. The second rebuild I finally was able to remove a large part of the hot starting issue, along with retarding the timing as well. But it still isn't gone.

Starting problems when engine is hot

Weak started windings...this use to happen alot with GM/Chevy trucks. Your starter may just need replaced, and/or the heat sheild which protects it from exhaust heat may have rusted and came of. have the starter tested when warm at your local Autozone..they can test it on the truck. If when its hot the starter pulls more than 300 amps replace it.

Truck won't start on cool mornings

Cool mornings sometimes means that condensation forms on the engine block and leads

Condensation causes tracking on the electrics

When it warms up the condensation dries up and there is no tracking.

It is worth throwing an old blanket over the engine if you reckon it is going to be cold to see if the problem goes away.(Leave a piece of paper or rag on the steering wheel to remind yourself to remove the blanket before you start the engine)

If that does the trick then go buy a can of "Ignition Seal" made by Holts and spray it on all of the electrics in sight when the engine is warm (NOT HOT!!), this will form a water proof skin on the leads.

Truck won't start right away when its hot.

U MAY HAVE A DEFECTIVE ENGINE COOLANT TEMP (ECT) SENSOR, U NEED A SCAN TOOL TO TEST THIS PART, THIS IS NOT THE SENDER FOR THE TEMP GUAGE THIS IS THE SENSOR THAT TELLS THE FUEL INJECTION COMPUTER HOW COLD OR HOT THE ENGINE IS, IF IT READS LOW THE SYSTEM WILL GET TO MUCH FUEL AND CAUSE A HARD START, DO U NOTICE ANY BLACK SMOKE WHEN IT FINALLY STARTS?
