When the engine is cold, sounds quiet. While still cold and coming off hi idle, it is very quiet. as engine warms sound gets louder. I used a stethscope all over engine and all acc.except upper timming belt idler which was noisey. i replaced whole belt kit, all idlers. the noise still there. replaced upper idler pulley again. it sounds like that bearing is rough and didnt accomplish a thing.listening to motor again, i noticed the sound just like the upper idler bearing coming from the exhaust cross over pipe. the manifolds -both sides are quiet. i checked for any moving parts or vibrating parts and bent a heater line away a little bit. didnt see any thing rubbing or vibrating, sombody said carbon build up? if it were this, would it not do this cold? i also listened to heads....sound as quiet as a church mouse. engine is quiet in line from front to back center. i would appreciate any help you can give me.

I'm assuming here that you are familiar with driving turbo engines. What do you mean by 'coming and going'? Are you losing boost as your driving or is it not building pressure as you accelerate? This sounds like it might be a 'boost' leak issue. This could be anything from a loose pipe clamp, a faulty wastegate set up to an actual turbo issue.
Give the turbo set up a basic check. Check all of the pipes and clamps to see if any are loose, split or damaged. A hole or leak in the system can cause pressure loss especially at higher engine speeds.
Is the turbo making any strange noises? Get a helper to rev the engine up to 3000 rpm and hold for 3 or 4 seconds and back to idle. Listen for grinding, hissing and rattling noises. Hissing at a steady engine speed suggests a pressure leak. grinding and rattling suggests a faulty turbo.
I would suggest taking it to a turbo specialist as this sounds like it will need to be tested 'under load'.
Hi, Please check you engine oil as a first start. A loud noise could indicate engine failure or engine auxiliary components failure. You can know if the sound is tapping or knocking or if the sound is rubbing or grinding sound due to rotation. At time you may have a drive train fault
could be anything from belt noise to lifter tick to rod knock..lifter tick is under the valve covers..rod knock sounds like hitting the block with a hammer..if its rod knock see what your oil pressure is.. should be around 30 to 45 psi cold..warm will be as low as 15..depending on oil type..most lifters can be adjusted by removing the cover and doing adjusting depending on the vehicle..good luck
Belt idler pully or tensioner pully maybe . Pull the serpentine belt off an see if the noise goes away . Just running the engine for a second or two you should be able to tell , an this will not hurt anything .
When does the noise occur, while driving only, or driving and idle, in gear, or in neutral and park? If it occurs all the time (while driving and at a stand still in cold weather) it could be the fuel pump. If it occurs only while driving, it may be a wheel bearing. Describe the noise (humming, grinding, whirring, etc), and what is the mileage on the Pilot? Answer my questions so I can fine tune my answer. Thanks!
bmw should NOT SHAKE THE STEERING WHEEL AT ADLE. OK SOUNDS LIKE ITS RUFF UNDER LOAD LIFT THE HOOD AND CHECK FOR A HISSING SOUND IF SO IT IS VACUUM LEAK. MOST COMMON. iF TAHAT ISNT IT LETS MAKE SURE ITS IDLEING AT 800 RPM IF HIGHER PLEASE PUT ON FORM HERE AT FIX YA AND WE CAN WORK THIS OUT CHECK IDLE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, AND THEY ARE BAD AT NEEDING MOTOR AND TRANS MOUNTS MY BET WOULD BE ON MOUNTS
i would inspect the trans mount it may be bent, reverse is a big strain on the drivetrain and if it's not aligned properly this could be your problem, look for the post on the cross member that has arubber bushing on the bottom,if it's not centered its hitting the mount as for the steering column noise i'm thinking this noise maybe the clock spring this is part of the air bag system, the spring can be weak and in turn rubs on casing causing noise, believe it or not the engine noise your describing is a normal operating noise!
Additional information:
engine is a 3.4 ltr. 4 wd
It is a 1999 model instead of a 1997.
