How do I change the rear differential oil in my 2004 XC90 Volvo?

I have confirmed the fill plug is located on the Differential cover (rear facing) Closer to the left about half way up. Although Summit after market Differential covers has a drain plug the OEM cover does not. You will need to suction the old fluid out then add the new fluid. From what I can see the fill plug is 13mm. Capacity is .7L. Used Volvo Rear Axle Fluid (API GL-5 Low friction part #1161329). Also I read that it requires one aluminum crush washer (same size as engine oil drain plug). I don't know about reusing the origional.

Can anybody tell me the correct type and weight of oil a 2004 volvo xc 90 uses also # for replacment oil filter

Oil filter is provided by year, make, model of your vehicle at the parts store. ---
Oil and fluids Oil quality
Engine oil must meet the minimum ILSAC specification GF-2, including ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF and SJ/Energy Conserving.
Your Volvo has been certified to standards using ILSAC oil specification GF-2 5W-30. Volvo recommends use of oil with a quality rating equal to or higher than ILSAC GF-2. Equivalent and better oils include ACEA A1, API SJ, SJ/CF, and SJ/Energy conserving. Lower quality oils may not offer the same fuel economy, engine performance, or engine protection.
Volvo Cars recommends Castrol. Depending on your driving habits, premium or synthetic oils may provide superior fuel economy and engine protection. Consult your Volvo retailer for recommendations on premium or synthetic oils. Oil additives must not be used. NOTE: Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance is carried out. This oil is only used at customer request, at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer. Operation in hot climates.
When temperatures exceed 86° F (30° C) in your area, Volvo recommends, for the protection of your engine, that you use a heavier weight oil, such as SAE 10W-30. See the viscosity chart below. pg129a.jpg Oil viscosity (stable ambient temperatures)
Operation in temperate climates
Incorrect viscosity oil can shorten engine life. Under normal use when temperatures do not exceed 86° F (30° C), SAE 5W-30 will provide good fuel economy and engine protection. See the viscosity chart above. Extreme engine operation
Synthetic oils meeting SAE 10W-30 and complying with oil quality requirements are recommended for driving in areas of sustained temperature extremes (hot or cold), when towing a trailer over long distances, and for prolonged driving in mountainous areas. Changing oil and oil filter
Oil and oil filter changes should be made at 7,500 mile (12,000 km) intervals. Volvo does not recommend the use of oil additives.
Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is changed at the normal maintenance intervals except at ower request and at additional charge. Please consult your Volvo retailer.

Where is oil filter housing and how to get to it? XC90, 2005.

Hello,
Changing the oil is very simple, anyone with any car knowledge should be fine. The first thing you need to do is jack up the volvo with either ramps or jack stands. Once you get underneath the car their is a plastic covering, take the number 12 socket, i believe, and take off the 7 bolts that hold the cover on. This will expose the bottom of the engine. You will see the drain plug, it is a 17 millimeter bolt, remove that and put a bucket or something to catch the oil. once that drains put the drain plug back. next you have to take the filter off. It is not a generic filter, it is a cartridge filter. From the drain plug it is on the right hand side, and a little lower. you will recognize it, its a round covering. now volvo says you need the special tool to remove it. But if you go to kragen or any auto parts store you will find an oil filter wrench, its just like pliers but a little bigger and round. now the pliers have teeth on them that will dent the covering, so i take a towel and wrap it around the contacts then clamp it and turn it will come loose. once you take that off. take the cartrige out, and REMOVE THE OLD O RING FROM THE FILTER CAP!!! it is a black ring that goes about mid way through the treads. you will have a new one in the filter box. screw the filter cap back on and tigethen. after that put the protective cover on. Fill the oil with 7.1 quarts, i like to use synthetic mobil 1. (7.1 on t6 model). also make sure your bucket is big enough for the 7 quarts of oil. its a very simple process ive done it a million times. if you need pictures or other help with anything on the volvo xc90 email me at [email protected]

1999 volvo v70 oil change questions

You can buy a canister wrench at the local auto parts store. You do not need to torque the oil filter on, just hand tighten, No new gasket for the drain plugs just do make sure that it is tightened properly
