My 1999 Beetle did the same thing. I didn't have any luck repairing it, even tried a different magazine but nothing helped. Fortunately I found someone local selling a used trunk-mounted CD changer for $10, so I bought that and it worked like a champ.
So for me, I ended up having to replace the CD changer to fix this problem. Hope you have better luck.
As with any tasks on a Mercedes or other vehicle, when you are dealing with disconnecting and connecting electrical systems, you should always disconnect the negative battery terminal. This will ensure your safety and prevent you from getting an electric shock.
Dash Panel
Pry the dash panel from the dashboard. There are two levers on the sides of the Mercedes factory-installed CD changer. Pulling down on the levers will release the radio from the bracket in the dash. You will have to remove the wiring and the antenna cable from the back of the system.
Installation
You can replace it with a newer version of a CD changer or insert the same one, once it has been repaired. Slide the player into the installation sleeve of the stereodock. Pay attention to where the wires were removed and connect the unit's wiring to the leads in the wiring harness adapter. Connect the antenna cable lead into the antenna detector. Snap on the dash panel to complete the removal and installation.
I have just spent $1500.00 to fix this low oil pressure problem. The main cost was having the timing chain replaced and where the oil pressure problem was found. The low oil pressure problem is caused by a bad gasket that is under a plate inside the timing chain cover. The dealer wanted to replace the whole housing as Nissan dose not offer a new gasket and wants you to replace the inner timing chain housing. The plate covers part of the oil gallery, the gasket breaks out from this plate and that is where the oil pressure goes. The gasket can be replaced by removing the plate and making a new gasket. Note getting to the plate inside the timing cover is a major labor issue that takes about 12 hours to complete start to finish. I had to fabricate the gasket my self as the dealer would not. Cost for fixing the bad gasket was about $17.00 for materials. Replacing the timing chain was at my request as it was making noise.
FOR a cracked Valve cover, $500? Find another mechanic. The valve cover might cost $40 and a new seal is $7 or $8 and 20 min to put it on. Now, if he actually talking about repairing the Head $500 is about right but not for a valve cover.
no such thing as a valve cover valve. you have a leakey valve cover and you replace the gasket, if you do one do both they come in a kit. also to do that job you have to do the intake gasket and plenum gasket as well. about $150.00 in parts maybe 5 hours labor
most cd changer magazines are the same, the best way to find a replacement is the goto an audio/video retailer and speak with an agent about trying some in your cd changer.
i had to do the same thing for my 07 mercedes c230 due to the fact i wasnt paying $150 for a piece of plastic
I have the same problem on a 2003 Town & Country. The cover for the front 3 cylinders is quite straight forward, but in order to do the rear cylinders I believe you are going to have to remove the cowling below the windshield. You will need a gear puller to remover the windshield wipers first, then remove the cowling. Than should give you more room to work. It's still not going to be easy, but it sure beats paying hundreds of $$$$ in labor charges.
The timing belt is inside the valve cover. You have to remove the the valve cover gasket. Underneath that you will find the valves, the head (the top of the engine block). There is a pulley that is used to tighten the timing belt. The pulley is attached to the piston and valve timing. This pulley is usually marked as to where it should be positioned in relationship the timing of the pistons and the cam shaft rotation. This is what is referred to as stting the timing in the engine, and the timing of the distributor. Since your belt is broken the engine has lost track of its timing, so you might have to refer to a manual on your model of car to set the timing. You will also need to replace the valve cover gasket when you put the valve cover back on.
