Okay so i fixed the problem myself, this is how to do it. take out the consol shifter bot shift knob. take off the connecting sockets to the shifter. pull up the carpet and follow the cable it goes through the fire wall on the passenger side both cables go through another boot there. take a flat screw driver and pry off the boot. feed the cables underneithe the plastic peice that go through under the dash. open the hood and take off the sockets connecting the cables to the transmission. they are in a bracket a little further down the line pull them out of that then you should be able to take the cable right out. assemble in reverse order

Transmission linkage came apart. plastic grommet tht holds cable to shifter deteriated

That gromet i think can be replace sperate, you can change it with out the whole cable, call dealer and they will know for sure, i know some cars the cable needs replacing when that happens. also thats uncommon the groumet that goes bad alot is the one at the trany where the cable hooks to shift arm, that one you can buy the small arm with new gromet on it, its no expense.

My daughters friend replaced the shift cable on her 1996 Sunfire 75K. It will now only shift from 1st to 2nd but not to 3rd. I can also hear a wining sound in park. Can you adjust this cable?

My name is Tom and I am here to help.

Yes, there is an adjustment for the shifter. I do not know who changed the cable. I would suggest they adjust the cable to remedy this. I could walk someone through, but I would need to talk to the person directly.

Let me know if you want to do this.

Same as above. Shifter moves but stays in park!!

Likely the shift cable has broken or become disconnected. Move the shifter and watch the control arm on the transmission to see if it moves. If not, check/ replace the cable.

Cant get key out of ignition on 97 sunfire

I have worked on several vehicles with this same problem and each one was a relatively simple repair with no parts involved, first off the shift interlock has nothing to do with it and will not prevent your vehicle from going into park, it is designed to work ONLY when coming out of park. The problem your having depends on the type of shifter handle your vehicle has, if the release lever is on the bottom and you have to push up with your fingers to release it, then the problem is...there is a rubber type cover that surrounds the release button, after time it becomes distorted and bunches up preventing the shifter from fully engaging in the park position (even though it appears the vehicle is going into park)if your careful you can work the rubber cover out and your problem is fixed. If your shifter button is on the side and pressed with your thumb the cable needs to be adjusted, this cables only purpose is to prevent key removal except when in park and is easily adjusted, with the center council removed, if you look at the front of the shifter base you will see 2 cables that snap into the shifter frame, the larger one is the gear selector cable, the smaller one runs up to the steering column and operates the mechanism that prevents key removal, where the cable snaps into the shifter frame is where the adjustment is done and is identical to a kick-down cable used on older vehicles with automatic transmissions, right where it snaps into the frame there will be a button you can press down releasing a spring loaded adjustment arm, make sure you first mark the arm for reference then press down the button and adjust it a little either way until it functions properly, hope this helps and good luck
