1991 Oldsmobile 98 Reagancy, It would not start,( the starter would not operate, the starter, battery and solenoid were all good.) I found a small wire broken in the steering column, It came from the ignition switch, I soldered the wire back together and the car started fine. It ran for several days. Now it wont start again, I checked the wire and it is still good.

The battery is fully charged,When I turn the key there is no clicking sound. If i bypass the solenoid the starter will turn the engine over but the car will not start.

At first my car would not start. A mechanic found after testing the starter and my alternator that it was my wiring from my ignition. So he fixed that and now my car starts but only stays on for about 3 sec. and shuts off.

He was trying to reset my ignition by following some reprogramming system but still would not stay on. He feels it might be something with the computer.

Okay, question, when you tried to start it this time, why wouldn't it start? Did it make a clicking sound? Was it turning over? Did it make any sound like the battery was almost dead?

Check the power voltages at the starter with a voltmeter in the starter there is 2 wires one small coming from the ignition switch and one big one coming from the positive side of your battery with the meter put the negative lid on the negative side of the battery now disconnect the small wire from the starter and make this wire to contact the red lid of the meter put your voltmeter in dc and select the setting for 20volts on your meter after you have make all of this have some one to turn the key to start and ask him to try to crack your car if you read 0 volts on your meter then you have a problem with the small wire coming from the ignition switch if your meter reads 12- to 14 volts then is your stater sometimes if you hit your stater with a hammer they do start so try to do all of this and you can find your problem thanks and good luck

98 olds aurora i turn key wont start. all else seems fine after a few attempps it will start any idea whats wrong?

You mean it cranks but won't start, or it just won't crank over?

If it won't crank, possibly a defective starter motor or starter solenoid. To be sure: when it won't crank, put a test light on the small wire to starter solenoid with key held in start position. Wire should have power. If it does, defective or failing starter motor or starter solenoid. If no power on the wire, check battery and starter connections for loose connection. Further testing requires a wiring diagram to see the whole starting system.

90' cutlass ciera 4 cylinder won't turn over

Could be a bad starter. Try tapping on it with a large screwdriver or hammer, then try starting. If it starts that time, bad starter.
If you know how to jump the starter solenoid to the starter motor, you could check starter operation. On the solenoid is a purple wire. Use a small screwdriver (key off, car in park) and bridge that post with the purple wire to the large battery terminal on the starter. If starter is good, it will start cranking the engine. If you just get another click, the starter is bad, assuming the battery cable connections are clean and tight.

Car was fine but when i went to start it i get nothing at all battery good

could be the small wire from ignition to the starter motor ,not the main battery feed wire, the wire that goes to the solenoid,or possible starter motor,

Have a 91 honda accord....it will not start...at one time someone told me to tap on the starter it started....now it will not....i had the battery ck that was ok...could it be my alternator?

If, when the switch is turned, the starter motor does not operate at all but the solenoid clicks, the problem lies with either the battery, the main solenoid contacts, or the starter motor. If, as you say, the battery is good, and fully charged, that would mean that is was either the solenoid contacts or the starter motor.
If the solenoid plunger cannot be heard (no click), the battery is bad, the fusible link is burned, or the solenoid itself is defective. Once again, if the battery is good, it would be the fusible link, or the solenoid. The fusible link is in the engine compartment fuse block (the box on the upper left as you face the vehicle). It is either 80A or 100A.
If you want to test the circuit, you can run a fairly heavy INSULATED wire between your pos. battery post and the SMALL terminal on the solenoid (just touch the end to the solenoid). If the starter turns, you may have a ignition switch, neutral start switch, or some other wiring problem.
Your alternator is not the problem.
Hope this is helpful.
