Two symptoms here Keith, and I just had this, same car year and model. The pedal could either be a bit loose, check the cable and throtle. Have someone check, when the cars in neutral, they manually rev it, and watch the RPM's. They should go 3-4 as normal. If this is the case, and its not the cable or pedal, REPLACE spark plug cables and wires. Odd, but that was the fix to mine. Hope it helps.
SOURCE: Accelerator Loss
From my experience in owning a VW it souns electrical. Most issues with VWs are electrical related. Most likely a realy of some type. Could also be fuel injection but that is electronic too.

SOURCE: 2006 Jetta - push the accelerator, no rise in RMP
The same thing happened to me. Last winter I had accidently touched the gas pedal when starting my Jetta diesel, flooding the engine, and it threw everything off. I managed to drive...with high rpms and little to no power... to the dealers and they hooked it up to the computer and reset everything. (some dash lights were on as well.) It took 3 minutes total, and it was fixed, and I have never had that problem since. I now know to never touch the gas pedal!
I do not know if this is your exact problem, but it may be worth checking into.

Sorry I am not quite familiar on the setup of auto transmission as all my cars are manual but I can give some pointers because I had the same issue on a manual box few years back.
Check the transmission fluid. Do a drain and fill. This is your first cheapest option to take. (you need to consult your service manual on how to do it or take it to a mechanic) This is the most common fix for transmission issue.
Worst case scenario would be the whole auto gear box might be stuffed. In that case take it to a auto transmission specialist to check. Sorry I do not know the cost involved.
Please rate if it fix your issue Thanks!
