High idle Mechanic can't figure out why the idle is so high. Around 2,000. In Neutral the car is normal. When driving, you don't even have to use the accelerator to go a steady 45. The cruise control was supposedly disengaged months ago for a problem with it, before the idle problem. Any ideas?

Vacuum leaks or fuel pressure, or ECM.
When you press the accelerator you allow more air into the engine. The same extra air can get into the engine through leaks in the Vacuum system. Sometimes using a spray bottle of water and spraying the seams of the Intake manifold on a running engine can reveal the opening. Also spray any Vacuum lines and the Brake booster. A leak will change the RPM.
A high fuel pressure can cause an increase in RPM.
ECM- has a lot to due with timing and fuel demands.
Binding Linkage. Disconnect the throttle linkage and see if the RPM drops. If it does not, shut off the engine and work the Air horn Butterfly and check for smooth operation. It is possible that a mounting screw on the Butterfly shaft has slipped and the flap is binding or dirty.

Two possible sensors could be affecting it like the TPS or MAF sensor. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) might have a bad spot where the ECM won't get signal properly and causes the RPM to fluctuate

sometimes the radiator is just too plugged to respond to flushing. (happens a lot with a marginal radiator because when flushing, the solvent simply goes around the plugged area, and cannot build up enough force to break it free). From what you have written, this may be the case. Is the electric fan coming on and off at the right times? if not this also can give you similar problems. You have done the right things but may not have gotten the desired result. Hope this info helps you a bit.
good luck

Check the number 8 plug wire to be sure it hasn't corroded or burnt through at some point. It wouldn't hurt to replace that wire with a new one. If yours is the 4.6 liter you also may have a bad fuel injector on that cylinder causing it to either burn lean or over fuel causing the misfire.

Stalls at lights, sounds like it is chugging air like a tractor.

try this simple test
start the car and hold at around 1000 rpms until the engine warms up
now place it in gear with the handbrake on ( don't touch the foot brake
if it is idling at around 800 rpms and is smooth, apply the foot brake
if it plays up , replace the brake booster as there is a vacuum leak upsetting the idle mixture setting
recheck by allowing it idle in neutral with the hand brake on and the apply the foot brake

I have a 1996 Mazda Protege 1.5l LX. I just cleaned the IAC valve today as well as replaced the thermostat and then put everything back together. During the rebuild the distributor cracked around where one...

Regardless of anything else, that cap needs to be replaced. It has to be moisture free to properly operate or you'll get arcing and that can cause even more damage.

A vacuum leak will cause the high idle and it is possible the IAC could be damaged. Most of them have small nylon parts in them and get damaged if you use certain cleaners (like carb cleaner) on them. You've also got that ridiculously complicated and expensive IAC (around $400 new) so I'm sure you don't just want to replace it. I've seen used ones on Ebay for around $50. I would save that for a last ditch effort.

Vacuum leaks can be difficult and frustrating to find. A smoke machine helps but they are expensive. If you are a smoker, you can always pick a vacuum port on the engine to blow smoke into. Then, you just look for anywhere smoke is escaping and you found your leak.

Since you had the IAC off, I would pay special attention to the hoses there and the seal between the IAC and the intake.

Now, this problem only seems to happen intermittently. I have a 95 S-10 and recently when I've started it, it idles high and revs even though I'm in park. Sometimes it will even out when I've...

same thing happened to me, i do know my s 10 durango's problem was with the intake gaskets etc and the carburator, and the timing was off, i got the carb rebuilt and an overhaul put on it, its just timing issues, when you start and it high idles, tap the gas after a min of it being started and it'll slow down a lot and be normal, it high idles after being parked a while to warm up is what my mechanic told me mine was an 84, is yours carburated or fuel injected?? take it to a mechanic and get a diagnosis that would be your best bet, and about two months after mine doing the same the engine blew on me and it was three grand to fix, so i sold it, and it bley black smoke worse than a diesel, and it was gas, and you might get a hard knocking sound soon too, if you drive it really hard, is it a 2.8 L V6?? thats not a very good engine design anyhow, its the same as my s 10 if it is, any it'll probe die soon, happened to my friend the exact time that mine did and in all the same stages, but we drove like dumb teenagers, it was just last year, best of luck

When my Malibu is in park or in neutral, the RPMs run between 250 and 3. when my car is in drive or reverse the RPMs run normal. How do I adjust the high idol? where is this located?

There is no idle adjustment. That is controlled by the computer via the idle air solenoid. You can try cleaning the throttle body though. In fuel injected engines the throttle plate gets gummed up where in older cars it was kept clean by the gasoline flowing through it. Use any name brand carb cleaner that is marked "sensor safe" and spray around the perimeter of the throttle plate and also do that while running. After cleaning, it should run better. You can also clean off the cross wires inside the bore of the mass air flow sensor using a q tip and the same carb cleaner. Gunk buildup on the wires changes the way the sensor reads air flow.

My mechanic disconnected my battery in my 2006 Ford Taurus without backing up the volitile memory. I cant figure out how to get it back. My car doesnt know how to idle on its own now. How do I fix this...

There is a keep alive memory in the ECM. this is not affected unless the battery has diaconnected for 30 minutes or more. When the memory is lost it has to go threw a relearn procedure. It can be done in a bout an hour, but it has to have the hand held computer hooked to the car. Very specific driving has to be done. Other wise it takes about a month of normal driving to accomplish. Also when the memory is lost, the car just runs a little off, most people don't even notice. If you are having major issues with the idle, I would take it back to the mechanic.
Just a note. I have also noticed on some of the newer vehicles that there is a quick learn procedure that has to be done after a battery disconnect.

Warm up

The high idle is caused by the choke and the high idle on the carb. It is working normal and you do won't to warm up this motor before going. When it is warm and you hit the gas it activates the choke pull off to bring the idle to normal. Your mechanic is used to fuel injection that will control the fuel/air mix according to temp. I still let my injected cars warm up so the oil can thin a little. If you jump on the highway with cold thick oil it can all wind up in the to of the motor.
