2000 Pontiac Sunfire wont start

My car was doing fine then i went to a friend's and when i was trying to leave, it wouldnt start. I tried battery and new starter. We checked all fuses. We can get my car to start by jumping the starter but it wont start by turning the key... any ideas?

my 2002 sunfire doesn't start every time I turn the key When it doesn't start with the key we use a screwdriver and jump start the starter. It takes two of us to do this. Then it will start for the next few times until it does it again. I've changed the ignition switch and the starter already.

I do not have a solution, but do have simular problem. If the switch is getting power on mine it works fine. then out of nowhere it wont work, when this happens there is no power to switch. I can jump a hot wire to it for a second, then remove it and then it magically seems to work. I am at wits end working on this POS. surely there is a GM mechanic out there that is aware of this known and widespread issue.

Its likely that you have either a bad ignition switch or a bad neutral safety switch (if stickshift, clutch switch) Try starting in neutral...if it starts, change neutral switch (jump across clutch switch, check starting in neutral with your foot on the brake) Ignition switch is on top of steering column under dash.

When jumped my truck runs but wont start again. i replaced battery and it still wont start

check the resistance on the wires from the battery to your fuse panel and your ground wires also check to make sure you have good connections inside your fuse box if all is good there try to bench test the starter by applying a direct 12 volt power supply to.

At times veh will not crank, let sit 45min -1hr and try and startswhen it wont statrt turn key and nothing

Look for 'dirty' battery terminals. They should look shiny and new when installed on a fresh battery.
Use a wire brush to shine it up and get rid of any signs of corrosion.

Had a friend with a Pontiac Sunfire where this was a problem.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire wont turn over

ok i had kinda the same problem. if your father or bf is decent with mechanics ask him to check any see if there is any spark if not tell him to check the cranksensor to c if there is an current going to it, also when u go to start the car is there a (theft system light that comes on in the dash and flashes if so, turn the key fully as if you were going to start the car but dont crank it and leave it be for about 15-20mins or until the light stops flashing. then turn the key off and try start again. the thing is that when u install a stereo into one of these cars theres a anti theft system that stops fuel from going to the injectors. thats why when u install a aftermarket stereo u are supose to get eh harness so that it doesnt engage the ats(anti theft system). and if there is no current going to the crank sensor cut the wire long enough to hood an extra wire to it and then hook it up to ignition fuse in the fuse box(inside the car) this will send a a current to the crank sensor so when u turn the key on it will start. this is only a temperary fix. just gives u enough time to pick up the money to bring the car to the garage and get it checked correctly. anything else just ask.
