1997 DODGE RAM 1500 360 VERY LOW IDLE

I Have a low idle issue with my 5.9/360 it idles between 300-500 rpm, Ive replaced the IAS Controller it helped somewhat it doesn't always die, but idle remains dreadfully low, it causes the oil light to come on and occasionally dies. Could it be a bad fuel regulator problem or is the timing wrong. I have no vacuum leaks and the ignition hardware is all fairly new < 4500 miles, the engine is a factory rebuild. My truck is idling between 600 and 700 rpm, oil pressure light constantly coming on and off, it s got some power in the lower gears but drive and overdrive is weak it s got a miss replaced everything it was alot worse before i changed iac valve. i have replaced the computer, map sensor, tps, oxygen sensors, iac, crank postition sensor, speed control sensor, fuel injectors and seals, coil, distributor cap and button, plugs and wires, fuel pump. the purge solenoid is constantly clicking. help

I think you have ruled out the engine with all the parts you have replace. The transmission torque convertor is in lock up mode all the time. The engine is having to hard of a time to stay at the normal idle. The over drive clutches and soleniod are most likely damaged in the transmission.
I think you should take the vehicle to a trasnmission shop , The can check the torque convetror soleniods and pressure control soleniod.

The oil light coming on bothers me. I know you have the rebuilt engine in the vehicle but I think the oil pump in the engine is starting to go out or could be weak. The lower bearings connected to the crank shaft might be starting to leak. Have the oil pressure checked .

Due to low oil pressure is probley the sensor is on its way out and you need a volt meter to reajust the tps sensor back to speck . the proper setting is .5 volts in the closed setting and then have the battery checked out and see if you have a bad cell in it , with a drop in voltage this will cause a lot of problems that cant be explained , i will get backin touch to help with your problem .

i half to say after reading the post on the torque convertor being in lockup mode all the time is a fauls statment because if this was true the engine wont start or run at all , dodge built in a number of saftey factors to prevent engine damage and trans as well . if the engine is at 650 to 700 rpm range then its withen speck { in drive or park } . and to answer the age old question what weight motor oil to run in a dodge motor ,well i run 20 /50 castrol oil in all of my engines and havent lost and engine yet , i have years of reserch on different oils out there and aims and castorl are the only 2 i would run .

What weight of motor oil do you have in the engine? I have a 1999 Ram 1500 Quad Cab Sport with a 360 motor. My service rep at Dodge dealer told me in 1999 DO NOT put any higher than 10W30 in the motor. The lines and the oil pump are only dessigned to handle that. I've heard of so many people putting 10W40 or even 20W50 weight oil in these motrs and they normally blow up.

Hope is May Help

Does a 2001 chevy impala have a throttle screw and how to change the idle

No, the engine computer controls idle speed through the idle control valve on the throttle body assembly. Take it off and clean it and check operation with the electrical connector attached. When the key is turned to on, the pintle on the valve should have a noticeable movement, not a lot, but it should move a little.
Often the passages where the idle control valve mounts gets full of gunk (coking deposits) that inhibit good air flow through it. Clean it out and clean up the control valve if it is dirty.

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
