See if the "check engine" light is on. If it is, use an OBD II scanner to retrieve the codes if the car is 1996 or newer.
Older cars may have a code that can be retrieved by an original OBD scanner. The code 11 signals the same idle control problem as newer cars. The diagnostic procedure is the same for both
Disconnect your IAC valve and turn on your car. At this point your idle speed should rise like it's supposed to.
Turn off your car and reconnect your IAC. Restart the car and your idle speed should go back to normal. If it does, this MIGHT rule out the IAC but further testing is necessary. Try obtaining one from a junk yard if the cost of a new one is prohibited and see if that makes any difference.
Use a test light if the idle speed did not do what it was supposed to. Hook it up to the idle air control solenoid and watch the light.

What is an IAC Valve

Mark, IAC (Idle Air Control Valve), If engine is idling too fast, problem may not be the idle speed control system, but an engine vacuum leak. Check for vacuum leaks first to rule this possibility out. Also on your Toyota low coolant, air in the cooling system can cause the valve not to operate properly as I believe coolant has to run through valve for it to operate correctly. Fill/bleed air from cooling system. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

How do you fix an idleing problem on b2300 mazda truck?

What kind of idling problem ? An what year Mazda ? Idle is controlled by the engine computer via a IAC motor , idle air control valve or motor, what ever Mazda calls there set up ! Or if a fairly new vehicle, they use drive by wire or electronic throttle control . With the idle air control set up passages get plugged an don't allow enough air to by pass the throttle plate causing stalling problems . A vacuum leak can cause a ruff unstable idle an stalling also . A dirty throttle plate can cause idle problems as well ! A scan tool ,not a code reader is a very use full tool to check engine data parameters. With the scan tool you can view idle air control counts . To see if the engine computer is actually controlling the idle air control valve . Idle Air Control Valve

Also an engine misfire can cause idle problems , also clogged fuel injectors can as well . A good diagnostic technician would start with hooking up a professional grade scan tool , checking for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes , misfire data , engine sensor data , IAC counts ! 94 nissan altima won't start and iddle after cleaning IACV valve

An IAC (idle air control) motor is designed to adjust the engine idle RPM speed by opening and closing an air bypass passage inside the throttle body. The cars computer or PCM (powertrain control module) receives information from various sensors and will output signals to adjust the idle air control motor in or out to adjust engine idle speed by controlling engine idle air. An idle air control motor can fail one of two ways, either the motor short circuits and stops working or the motor will develop high resistance and cause the idle air control motor to react slowly, either failure can cause the engine to stall at idle. When a trouble code scan is performed it sometimes won't always detect a failed or weak idle air control motor.

I have a 1996 Eclips 2litre when you get in and start it with your foot on fuel it works fine when you take your foot off it dies out. Also its only getting 5amp/volts witch ever it is to the fuel ,map...

I am not saying 100% this is your problem because this is a fairly expensive part however your symptoms are classic IAC failure. To check the idle air control motor remove the unit, with the wires connected turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine, the idle air control should move in or out. If the idle air control motor does nothing it has probably failed, replace it with a new unit and recheck system. Note: while the idle air control motor is removed clean (use aerosol carburetor cleaner) the passages the idle air control uses to control idle air speed, also inspect the idle air control for a build-up on the seating (pointed) end and clean as necessary.

Shot in the dark here without knowing the vehicle but it could be an Idle Air Control valve starting to fail. Replacing Idle Control Valve on 97 Pathfinder, need help!

it's on the throttle body. Here's a Quest with same 3.0L engine. These often need cleaning with carb or throttle body cleaner

Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve When the engine (6007) is running but not at idle, the throttle valve controls the amount of air admitted into the engine. The powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) increases the fuel injection output in proportion to the increased airflow to achieve the appropriate air/fuel ratio. During idle, the throttle valve is almost fully closed. It is therefore necessary for the idle air control system to supply air for combustion during idle. The idle air control (IAC) valve allows a metered amount of air to enter the intake manifold (9424). The camshaft position (CMP) sensor detects engine speed and sends a signal to the PCM. The PCM sends a duty cycle (On/Off) signal to the IAC valve which allows additional air to enter the intake manifold. Air is added by the IAC valve to maintain the set lowest idle speed at which the engine can operate. The idle speed adjusting screw allows adjustment of the airflow into the intake manifold.

Fast Idle Control (FIC) Solenoid The fast idle control (FIC) solenoid helps maintain a constant idle speed while the air conditioning is operating. When the air conditioning is turned on, the front climate control panel sends out two signals. One signal is sent to the powertrain control module (PCM) (12A650) to engage the A/C compressor (19703). The second signal is a ground signal sent to the FIC solenoid relay, to engage the FIC solenoid. The FIC solenoid supplies additional air to adjust the increased engine load.

Nissan Quest 2001 turns off when idle

Idle air control at base of throttle body. Passages could be plugged or idle hard stop needs adjusting.

Air Intake System Sensors Air intake system sensors include a heated resistor-type mass air flow (MAF) sensor and throttle position (TP) sensor; both supply data to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM also monitors engine speed.
Air Intake System Control Devices The idle air control (IAC) solenoid regulates idle speed by adjusting the amount of air allowed into the intake manifold. Adjustment is made by varying the duty cycle output by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM will increase the duty cycle for added mechanical or electrical loads. The IAC solenoid is combined with the fast idle control (FIC) solenoid which is turned on when the air conditioner is engaged to help compensate for the additional load. The IAC valve must be replaced as an assembly with the FIC solenoid.
Fast Idle Control (FIC) Solenoid The fast idle control (FIC) solenoid (Figure 1) compensates for idle speed change caused by the operation of the air conditioner compressor. The FIC solenoid is controlled by the FIC relay. The FIC relay is energized when the air conditioner clutch is energized and the relay allows the FIC solenoid to turn on and let an additional volume of air into the intake manifold.

Throttle Body (TB) The throttle body (TB) controls the amount of air that flows into the engine through a single butterfly valve. The single butterfly valve opening is determined by the accelerator pedal. The TB is cast with an air bypass channel and houses several emission-related components for the powertrain control module (PCM).
--------------------------------------------------------
Throttle Position Sensor (TP Sensor) The throttle position (TP) sensor responds to the accelerator pedal movement. The TP sensor is a potentiometer that transforms the throttle plate opening angle into output voltage and sends the voltage signal to the powertrain control module (PCM). In addition, the sensor detects the opening and closing speed of the throttle plate and sends the voltage signal to the PCM. Also, the TP sensor is used to determine the air intake when the mass air flow (MAF) sensor fails. This mode of operation is called Fail Safe.
The TP sensor integrates the idle (IDL) switch within the housing. The IDL switch detects when the throttle plate is closed and an idle condition occurs. The PCM is supplied with this input signal.
