SOURCE: rear end gear ratio

you can count the teeth on the ring gear and divide that # by the tooth count on the pinion. An example is: ring gear 100, pinion 10 ...100divided by 10 is 10, expressed as 10 to one. (fake #) your diff is likely a 3 series such as 3.23 to 1. or a four series such as 4.11 to 1. If you have four wheel drive it is critical to match exactly. if not you can get better performance by changing ratio to something that better fits your needs. 4 series pull loads well, 3 series are better on fuel.(depending upon terrain)

SOURCE: installing pinion gear chevy rear differential how

it takes special tools to set that. its not a torque reading per se, you tighten it until rotational torque of the pinion shaft is reached. A shop that does read end work may need to help you.

Not really, unless there is a shift kit in there. Have a transmission shop check it out.

Will a 1996 chevy blazer LS 4wd differential fit into a 2000 chevy blazer LS rwd rear end ?

Measure the lenth of both rear ends. see iss all hardware will bolt up without fabrication. if its the same size it will work. But im afraid being a 4 wheel drive it will be geared lower then a regular pick up/ Drive shaft may work but if not it would have to be shortened or lenghthebed. alot of work. Brakes you could leave the non drum breaks on better stopping power. I honestly believe you would be better off just going to a scrap yard and find one very easy to remove and replave few hour job.

1992 chevy selverrado removing rear differential gears

- Jack it up and place it securely on jack stands.
- Drain Differential and remove differential cover.
- Remove wheels.
- Look inside the differential where the axle end is visible. There should be a circlip that you have to remove. Then you can slide the axle out which allows you to get to the differential gears.

Rear end is whinning in 96 chevy s-10 blazrer

Most likely your differential ring gear carrier bearings are worn and the alignment of the pinion gear to the ring gear is out of tolerance. If your truck is full time 4x4 from the factory there is also a good chance that the rear differential housing is also worn where one of the carrier bearings (left side most likely) is mounted. This is a fairly difficult repair to do at home due to the close tolerances that need to be measured to make sure the two gears mesh properly. If the differential housing is damaged then the entire rear axle should be replaced.

I have 58 chevy apache and have a turbo 400 transmission. It does 60 mph at 3000 rpm's. I would like to change the entire rear end so that it goes 60 mph at approx 2200 rpm. I now have a 350 engine in...

I don't think you can get a rear end that high sped, the best I've ever seen is a 3.2 something . I had that with a 305 and my engine revved higher than 2200 with that. I think you would be better off with a 700R4 transmission from the early-mid 80's. It should bolt on and the overdrive works off an electric/vaccuum switch mounted on the firewall. Hope this helps.

Need to know what speedometer gear is in a stock 85 caprice

There is no one stock speedo gear in a Chev. It is dependant on the combination of rear end ratio, transmission and tire size. Each car has the potential to be different. Theyare easily interchangeable. There is a small bolt holding a clamp where the speedo cable goes into the trans. Unbolt it and the speedo gear pops right out and slides off the end of the cable. If your speedometer is too slow put a bigger gear on, too fast needs a smaller one. It's trial and error but I think each tooth difference is 5 MPH, it's been awhile. Hope this helps.

Transmission

The transmission is a 700r4 not really a size for this. what you probably mean is what gears are in the differential, these should be either 3.73 or 2.73 depending if manual or auto. (owner of a 92 rs with a 305)

Trying to identify rear differential on 87 ford ranger 7.5 or 8.0 need to replace since teeth from gears were in case.

You most likely have the 7.5, as that was the stock rear axle on older rangers.
There should be a tag on the differential cover bolt that has the gear ratio and differential size on it.
