Hello,

To troubleshoot the system is difficult without reading the failure "codes" Both systems are very complex and include some non-serviceable "black boxes" . Unless you're an experienced technician, this is probably a dealer or independent Volvo specialist job to read and recommend the needed repairs.

The great temptation is to leave the lights on and continue driving but this could be dangerous. According to my Volvo dealer, the SRS (Suplimental Restraint System or airbags) fault could result in the bags going off at random. The ABS (antilock braking system) light could be anything from the antilock electronics being bad to having a failed master cylinder.

Neither of these systems are easily "shadetree mechanic" serviceable and a wiring diagram by itself probably won't get you too far. Best to have a Volvo technician at least diagnose the problem. You can then fix, patch or ignore from there.

Another advisory just in case: Complex systems like these may have multiple problems. When the tech. reads the fault code, it's the first one in sequence. You may fix the first problem, only to have another pop up, just like peeling the layers of an onion. A good, experienced technician should have an idea of these possible secondary faults, so ask him/her!

Note: I'm not a Volvo employee and base this advice on my experience with these systems on a Volvo similar to yours. I do recommend a Volvo or Independent Volvo technician because the cars are complex. Someone who works on Volvo's everyday is more likely to know their idiosyncracies than, with all due respect, a mechanic at your local PEP Boys who must work on everything. Going with a specialist may be higher initially but you'll save in the long run by avoiding expensive guesswork, not to mention time and frustration.

Good luck,

Dr of Motors

Re: Generic Trouble code scanners at Auto Parts stores: Can they read Volvo service codes?

Ans: Maybe, worth a try although most auto parts stores are oriented towards American cars.

No turn signals possible bad ground

If you only have 7 volts at that fuse your problem is in the power side of the circuit ! You need a power distribution diagram to find where that fuse gets it's power from , you have unwanted resistance in that circuit . It's not a ground problem , you need to do voltage drop testing on that circuit ! Do your brake lights work ? The power for the turn signal , ABS , Stop , an SRS fuse's in the left side instrument panel fuse block come fro the ignition switch ! Your ignition switch may be the problem ! SRS is air bag system !

Toyota Echo 2003 SRS light with ABS light blinking instead of Seat Belt Light

When you sit in the seat and put the seat belt on does everything work ok . If so look to the fact that you are required to wear a seat belt and the fact that you are not might be the problem.

Airbag light comes on for no reason

Hello Eric,

No such thing as "no reason" I am afraid...!

Possible causes are: things being forced under the seats, esp when the seats are moved. Someone adjusting the drivers, or passenger seat to it maximum limit (either way). There are often wires under the seats/in the seat belt stalks that can get pulled causing the AB light to come on. You can check to make sure any under seat wires have not been disconnected, with the ignition OFF.

If nothing obvious get someone to read the codes out from the control unit, high resistance is a common problem. However, and this is VERY important, you SHOULD NOT attempt and work on any SRS/AB system unless you are qualified to do so and/or have the battery disconnected. EVEN WITH the battery disconnected, if you use a multimeter on ohms setting, you can trigger the SRS/AB and they are deployed with HUGE force, enough to kill or cause serious injury. Please DO NOT risk working on this system unless you are trained to do so.

Car not starting or turning over indicates towards multiple possibilities. It can be issue with battery or weak battery. But if battery checks out ok, then it can be starter issue or faulty alternator or problem with low fuel pressure or no spark at spark plugs due to dirty spark plugs or faulty ignition coil or injectors getting cracked or dirty and needs to be cleaned.

To confirm the problem, the basic troubleshooting is required.

Airbag and srs light stay on , on my ml270

Only a compatible scanner is going to turn this off.Don't try to do it yourself, as with any air bag/srs (supplemental restraint system), these units contain what amounts to an explosive charge, and if not handled properly, by trained folks, they can very easily cause death, ansd a nasty one at that.As long as the system detects a snag, it will continue to turn that light back on, even if you do get it turned off. The system does a circuit check soon after the car is started, on this system, and the only way to turn off that light is to fix it. Could be as simple as a clockspring, so have it checked. This is one of the only things that I'm not really willing to give much info on, due to the potential for disaster. Sorry, it's just the old grease monkey looking out for your safety. If you get it diagnosed, and have any questions about what you have been told, or anything like that, please feel free to contact me. Good luck!

Abs and air bag light is on

The ABS stands for (Anti-Lock Brake System). The air bag light or SRS stands for (Supplemental Restraint System). The lights are staying on because there is a problem with both systems. They have nothing in common with each other. I suggest you have this looked at by a professional. Working on the SRS can be hazardous so leave that to a pro.
