Tranny slips when warm, runs fine cold, why?

I had this problem prior to today and I changed fluids and filter on the trans. I could drive the envoy sometimes for weeks, then the trans just slips in all gears. Let the envoy sit, drive away. Is there a simple fix to this problem? the last event I drove from Montrose to Rochester Hills, got off e-way GMC started slipping and stranded me.

That's a sign of hardened seals. They're stiff and leak when cold and soften and seal better as they warm up When did you change fluid last? You can try a fluid flush and a bottle of Lubeguard supplement. But really, start saving for a transmission rebuild.

SOURCE: I have a 2003 GMC Envoy, trans slipping that I have been towing

Low fluid can cause slipping. (depends upon how low) Most manufacturers post "safe" tow speeds. These are generally ignored. (not good). I recommend towing with driveshafts removed and where driveshaft has a "slip yoke" you install a yoke from a scrapyard and wire it to the tailshaft so it stays in place (keeps oil in and dirt out) Although you can't just detach the tow-bar and drive, it eliminates any possibility of trans damage, since the transmission cannot turn. (most use oil from pump to keep gearsets cool...when towing, pump is not pumping and over time and distance it can damage trans internals.)
Hope your problem is just low fluid and not a rebuild...keep in mind what I said though.

SOURCE: Put car in gear trans. Does not engage

tranny may need overhaul. It is possible that the vacuum actuator is leaking and will need to be replaced. Much cheaper then replacing tranny

SOURCE: transmission slipping on 03 GMC Envoy. what does iy mean when trans fluid measure high on dip stick?

Two things: #1 someone has overfilled it by mistake thinking they were putting oil in the engine. Yes I have seen this.
#2 The transmission cooler in the radiator could be leaking antifreeze into the transmission through the cooling line raising the fluid level. I would look for milk shake foam on the dip stick and make sure you check trans in park and not neutral.

My 05 pontiac montana shifts hard when warm up, fine when cold !

You may have to much fluid in trans. When fluid heats up it expands. Make sure you chk when trans is warm and running also vescosity may be to thin after warming you should change out your fluid if it is old and add a additive to the fluid. Lucas trans slip is real good one to use.

2003 envoy only runs 10mph when cold when warm runs fine

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION SLIPPING. BEST THING TO DO IF NOT.TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER.IF TRANSMISSION FILTER STOPPED UP TRANSMISSION CAN PUMP ENOUGH THROUGH DIRTY FILTER TO OPERATE WHEN FLUID GETS HOT BECOMES THINNER THEN IT WILL FLOW THROUGH FILTER BEFORE TRANSMISSION WILL SHIFT RIGHT.

Trans slips after it warms up. shifts fine when cold

get the fluid and filter changed by someone who knows what they are doing, pray to whatever god you believe in.

It is 20 years old and you may well be looking at a rebuilt tranny job in the near future.

Transmission shift from 1st to 2nd has hesitation

Look for vacuum leaks. There are tons of hoses, replace dried and cracked ones....

The trans shift issue that you describe seems that the trans is being told to hold back the shift, there is a unit at the end of the vacuum tube, AT the trans, called a modulator. They have a rubber diaphram inside that fails and then trans fluid gets sucked into the engine, via this vac. hose. Pull it off and see if any trans fluid comes out...Should be ZERO.

Also, your vehicle must have regular trans service, especially you must change the FILTER. Disk material eventually clogs the filter, then trans fails really fast.

You may consider having a quick lube shop do the trans service, they use a machine that pumps new fluid in while unit is running, totally flushing converter, cooler, and lines...but DO replace the filter.

To be fair, the service suggestion has nothing to do with yoru complaint, necessarily...

Driving down the Interstate last week, just fine, suddenly it's like someone put the car in neutral. coasted to a stop, when i put in Park, there was a fine grinding, BUT car still wanted to roll down hill...

i would say the fine grinding was when you put it in park the output shaft was turning and the parking paw was trying to engage into park then the paw engaged into park but you say it rolled i am thinking that your problem is in the transfercase

1988 s10 transmission

if you drive it to much you will cause it to burn up, but to check the fluid level drive some to warm up( engine temp should be about half way (and you should reach 50mph) the park with it running(has to be running) and pull the tranny dipstick to check fluid level
if the trans and engine are cold it wont read the correct level

it will slip if the fluid is low

Transmission

Most likely a fluid change and the new Dexron 6 trans fluid will cure this issue, make sure to do a full service, fluid and filter. Note, Dexron VI replaces all previous Dexron fluids and I know from personnel experience it works great, longer trans life and smoother shifts and less problems like yours.
