No power 1990 Cadillac Seville. The car was running great when I parked it but it was using too much gas. Started it this morning and the car is running a bit rough at all speeds but is not a dead miss. The car will not go over 50 MPH and it smells hot, but the temp guage is normal and I am not losing coolant. I am not getting any error codes. When I try to accellerate the transmission hits hard. All fluid levels are normal. - History - I recently changed out the TCP and the ICM. Backed off the ICM, through the computer, to set the TCP at +.2. The ICM has not controlled the idle speed well and the RPM at idle is usually too high. - Question - What will cause the car to have no power, smell hot and yet not be running hot? Vacuum leak? Dwell ( dwell and timing is computer controlled )? Any suggestions. Thanks.

I will replace the converter. This sounds very plausible. I will get back to you.

I took the car into a shop and they performed a fuel pressure test, both at idle and under driving conditions. The fuel pressure was fine under all conditions. He also performed a scan and all sensors are in ideal range. The only errors he got pertained to the computer. The 52 error shows the computer has lost memory. I changed the ECM and used my eeprom chip. No difference. I put in the eeprom chip from the replacement computer. No difference. The only codes I have gotten now are are in History. E052, B448 and B552. I cleared these codes and they have not reappeared, but the car still performs the same. What should I do next?

OK, here is what I have found. #1 cylinder has 0 PSI. The other 7 have 75-80 PSI. The car is not burning oil and is not smoking. The exhaust is not making a popping noise and there is no blow by or blow back through the carburator. I used a mechanic's stethoscope and listened to injectors and they are all firing. Listening to the valve covers does not indicate any problems with the lifters or rocker arms. There is no oil in the radiator. There is no water in the oil pan. How can I have a cylinder with 0 PSI compression and there are no other symtons other than the loss of power?

cadman000. You were correct about the catalytic converter. I hear you about, "in my world" concerning a dead miss. The computer can compensate for this at idle speed, but not much above that. Other than the loss of power, there are no other symptoms that would point to any of the conditions you suggest. A hole in the piston would produce enough exhaust smoke to be quite obvious. A stuck valve should produce either blow back through the throttle body for an intake valve or a sucking back into the tail pipe for an exhaust valve. I do not see either of these conditions. A blown head gasket between cylinders would show a flucuation of pressure between the two cylinders. All of the cylinders test fine except for this one. A blown gasket between the cylinder and the intake manifold valley should produce a lot of blow by. I simply am not seeing any of these symptoms. When I discover the cause of 0 PSI on cylinder #1, I will post back. Thanks.

Code eo52 indicates that the "long term" memory in the ecm has been reset. You will get this code when power is removed from the ecm. B448 is low refrigerant pressure. B552 indicates that the keep alive or "long term'' memory in the bcm has been reset ans a result of power being removed forom the bcm. What is a TPC? The throttle position sensor should be set at -1.0 to +1.0. at lowest position by the ICS motor. The throttle position sensor should be set at 10.5 to11.5 when the ICS motor is at its maximum extension. This is done by the ICS plunger adjustment is at its lowest point. . A mis adjusted TPS sensor will result in a great loss of fuel mileage. It appears the converter is stopped up on yours.

Pull the valve cover on the dead cylinder and check for intake valve operation. The rockers are screwed into a bracket that have self tapping bolts on them. You may have one of them backed out and this will cause no pressure on that cylinder. I have seen this on a 4.1 motor. You may have to replace rocker bracket.
